When her daddy whooped, she burst out laughing. Her face was still bright red by the time Mike pulled his shirt out of his jeans and ripped it open.

“You’re wearing our shirt,” she said, searching his face.

He held up the ring box. “I think it’s time we got engaged, baby doll.”

An eagerness entered her expression. He opened the box to let her finally see the ring, and she gasped and brought both hands to her mouth. “Mike.”

“It’s two pieces,” he said into the silence that had fallen after his show of ripping off his shirt. “This piece doesn’t have any gems, and you can wear it while you work on the farm. When we’re just goin’ to church or horseback riding, you can fit this piece onto it.”

The second piece acted like a wrap-around flower, with a massive, round diamond making up the “bloom” of the flower.

Gerty stared at it, her eyes wide, and Mike held up his hand when her younger sister started to say something.

“Do you like it, baby doll?”

She finally blinked and looked up at him. “I love it.”

He got down on one knee and held up the ring. “Gerty, I love you with all I have in my heart, and all I want is to be with you forever. Will you marry me?”

Gerty shook her head in rapid-fire nods. “Yes.” She laughed and launched herself at him. He managed to snap closed the ring box and catch her, all her long limbs wrapping around him. “Yes, baby, yes. I’ll marry you.”

The crowd of family lifted the roof with the noise they made with their applause and whooping. Whistles and yeehaws surrounded them as Gerty fluttered kisses across his face.

With her balanced on his single knee, he finally took her face in both of his hands and brought her mouth to his.

Somehow, amidst the chaos, he managed to kiss her properly for about two seconds before someone pulled them apart.

“Put the ring on, Uncle Mike,” someone said, and one of Hunter’s little girls handed him the diamond ring.

Gerty stepped away from her daddy and turned back to Mike. She gave him the flirtiest smile as she held out her left hand.

He slid the diamond band onto her ring finger and then lifted it to his lips and kissed it.

Ah’sandOh’sfilled the air, and then Jane handed Gerty her shirt. She pulled the tee he’d made for her months ago over her blouse, and they positioned themselves properly so that his momma and hers could snap pictures of their official engagement.

“Dinner,” Aunt Elise called, and food always stole the attention from Mike when he needed it to.

“Three days,” he whispered into Gerty’s ear. “I’m going to be yours in three days.”

She looked up at him. “I love you, Mike. I can’t wait to be yours.”

“I love you too, Gerty.”

SNEAK PEEK! HIS SIXTH SWEETHEART, CHAPTER ONE:

Jane Hammond stood in front of the mirror in her parents’ bathroom and clipped her hair back. She’d slept in rags meant to make her golden locks curl, and boy had it worked. A little too well, and Jane had already complained to her mother about how “poodly” she looked.

Momma couldn’t do anything about it, and she was super involved with helping her best friend’s son get married today.

Jane loved Mike as if he were her brother. They were only a couple of years apart, and because Momma was best friends with his mother, she’d spent a lot of time growing up with him. They shared a lot of the same characteristics, but Jane wore everything she felt and thought on the outside, while Mike had learned to cage it inside him.
