Page 97 of His Fifth Kiss

She threaded her fingers through his hair and held him right where she wanted him, kissing him back exactly the way he needed.

“What are you doing here?” he asked between kisses.

Gerty kissed him again, and Mike was content to let her set the pace. She pulled away a few moments later, her chest rising and falling quickly with her breath.

“I missed you,” she whispered. “And I was at Pony Power, and I thought—I have never gone to the city to see him. He always comes to me.”

She looked up from underneath her eyelashes. “I maybe can’t go to New York City with you, but I can—and I will—come see you here in the city when you can’t make it to me. When you have to work too much, Mike, I won’t. When I have to work too much, you won’t. We have to make this work, because I donotwant to ever go another fifteen days without kissing you.”

Mike smiled, because when Gerty got talking, shetalked. “So you came to see me, because you missed me.”

She grinned back at him. “Yeah, that’s about right.”

“I told Kevin I needed a car, because I thought this one would have to be police evidence, and I just had to see you tonight.”

Her bright blue eyes lit up. “Really?”

“Really.” He ran his hands through her hair, which she’d taken out of its customary pony tail. “I—”

“I want a tour,” she said, because what he’d been about to say was three little words that would change them once again. “Of the condo, of the company. Your office.”

He chuckled and shook his head. He dropped his hands and settled into his seat. “The company is really big, baby doll.”

“The condo and your office then.”

He looked over to her. “Really?”

“Yes, really.”

“Why?”

She tilted her head the way she did when Max did something she didn’t like. The way she did when the answer was obvious to her, but the dog was still a puppy and didn’t know better.

“Because, Mikey, this is where you work. This is where I’m going to come when you’re working a lot, but we want to be together.”

He shook his head. “Gerty, it’s a long drive.” He shook his head. “I’m fine making the drive, because I live out there.”

“But you can’t always come,” she said. “You want this to work out between us, don’t you?”

“More than anything,” he whispered.

“Then I want to come to you when you can’t get to me.” She said it so simply, like the sacrifices that needed to be made in a relationship belonged to both of them.

“Listen.” She reached over and ran her fingers down the side of his face. He leaned into her touch and let his eyes close. He did love her, and he allowed it to flow through him freely. To experience it and bask in how warm and wonderful it felt.

“Right now, we’re both working a lot, but I will not go a single day without seeing you because of work. James made it sound like it was my fault that we didn’t work, but….”

Mike turned to face her, but she didn’t wear any shame or pain on her face.

“I don’t believe him,” she said. “But that doesn’t mean he wasn’t right. You asked me to help us figure out this working situation, and here I am. I’m fixing what I don’t like about today.”

“You didn’t answer me this afternoon,” he whispered. “I thought you might be mad.”

“I didn’t answer because my riding lessons started at that same moment, that’s all. Then I finished, and then I drove here.”

Mike nodded, because Gerty didn’t really have an inauthentic bone in her body. “Every single day?”

“Every single day, baby.” She gave him a soft smile. “You either come to me on the farm, or I’ll meet you at your cabin, or I’ll come here. But if we’re both in the state of Colorado, I want to see you at least once a day.”
