“It’s true. When something tastes good, it means you put effort into it and not because you feel sorry or pity someone,” she explains and pulls that bottom lip of hers between her teeth.

“Right.” My eyes stay on her mouth as I move deeper into the room. When I’m close enough to wrap my arms around her waist, I do just that, not delaying in claiming her mouth.

“Jeez, Dad, get a room,” Hendrik says, making fake gagging noises.

I break the kiss and cock my head slightly to take in his expression. No longer does he have that sadness in his eyes. “Why don’t we get changed and go out to eat?” I offer. “Deal with this shit tomorrow.”

“Mexican?” Hendrik suggests.

“Why not.” I grin, shrugging, keeping my arms around Everleigh. I jerk my chin to the hall. “Go get ready.”

Hendrik doesn’t waste a moment in doing as I tell him, leaving me alone with my woman. I return my attention to her and reach up to grip her chin between two fingers forcing her to meet my gaze.

“I’ve been a dick, sugar.”

Everleigh blinks and her lips part marginally. “It’s okay. You’ve had a lot going on.”

“Don’t excuse away my being a dick, Everleigh,” I grumble sternly. “My head might have been fucked up, but it doesn’t give me the right to be that way toward you.”

“Okay,” she whispers, closing her eyes. I swear as she releases a breath tension seems to just seep out of her.

Yeah, I was definitely a dick to her, and she’s been worried about me.

Dropping my hand from her chin, I lean in and press my lips to hers. Claiming her mouth once more.

“I’m ready,” Hendrik yells from the front of the house, interrupting my moment with Everleigh.

Breaking away, I press my forehead to hers. “When we get back from dinner, and Hendrik is asleep, I’ll make it up to you for the way I’ve acted.”

Everleigh’s breath hitches and she gives me a small smile. “You don’t have to make up for anything. I understand it’s been hard on you.”

“Sugar, already told you, don’t excuse away the way I’ve acted.”

“Okay,” she answers, dropping her gaze, pulling that lip between her teeth again.

“You okay?” I ask, sensing something’s not right.

Slowly, she brings her eyes back up and shakes her head. If there’s one thing about Everleigh, it’s that she doesn’t lie. But that doesn’t mean she won’t keep something to herself unless urged otherwise.

“You wanna tell me what’s wrong?”

Everleigh shakes her head and pulls away. “Not right now. You’ve had enough today and—”

“Baby, talk to me,” I interrupt her.

“We getting food or what?” Hendrik calls out.

“I’m pregnant,” Everleigh blurts out at the same time.

And at the news, my chest tightens, and it’s all I can do to keep from collapsing to my knees.

CHAPTERSIXTEEN

EVERLEIGH

The look on the Daemon’s face when I blurted out about being pregnant will forever be seared in the back of my mind. It was one of shock. joy, and sorrow all in one. He didn’t get a chance to respond since Hendrik came in the kitchen and all but dragged us out to his dad’s truck. This doesn’t mean Daemon didn’t react. He’s kept me close.

At dinner, his arm stayed around me the whole time. It was sweet but scared me all at once because I didn’t know if this was how things were supposed to be. After eating our fill of Mexican food, Daemon drove us back to the house, where Hendrik went straight to his room to pass out. It was still early in the evening, but with the past several days he’s had, I’m sure he’s beyond exhausted and could use a good night’s sleep.
