“No, you shouldn’t have.” Daemon tightens his hold around him. The hand at my back flexes. “You turned a shit day into one I’ll never forget. It fuckin’ sucks that we buried Lana today, but I’m gonna tell you something. Lana wrote a letter before she died and before coming home, I read it. She explained things, and I get it. Questions that were fuckin’ with my head she answered. And, baby, I’ll tell you this, Lana wrote about us giving Hendrik brothers and sisters. Said for me to be happy. And you, sugar, are not only giving Hendrik a sibling, but you make me fuckin’ happier than I’ve ever been in my goddamn life. Other than the moment Hendrik was born. The only thing to remain now is you because the way I see it, with death comes life. We lost a beautiful soul, though we’re gaining a new one.”

My tears stream down my face unabashed and I can’t stop them even if I wanted to. “I’m scared.”

“Nothing’s going to happen to you, Everleigh,” he assures me, pulling me flush against him, and wrapping his arms fully around my waist.

“But what if they find out and take this one like they did my son?” I whisper the question that haunts me most.

“They’ll die at my hand before I allow that to happen, Evs.” He growls fiercely. “They can try all they want, but I’ll make sure not one damn thing happens. I won’t let them get anywhere near you or this baby. You hear me?”

“Yes.” I nod, my breath hitching.

“Good,” he remarks, sliding his fingers up and into my hair. “Now, it’s time to finish what I’ve been wanting to do since I kissed you earlier.”

Before I can respond, his lips are on mine, and he falls back onto the bed. Daemon rolls and soon enough he has my clothes out of the way. Using his mouth, he trails kisses down to kiss me in places I ache for him most. By the time he makes his way back up, I’m a panting, withering mess.

“Hendrick,” I cry out as he sinks deep inside and takes me in the way only he knows how and it’s better than ever.

“Fuck, sugar, I fuckin’ love you,” he growls, partly groaning as he joins me in the bliss.

“I love you too.”

Without pulling out, Daemon rolls us until I’m straddling him and moves us beneath the sheets.

“Sleep, baby,” Daemon murmurs, pressing a kiss to the top of my head as I lay over him, my eyelids growing heavy.

CHAPTERSEVENTEEN

EVERLEIGH

The smell of bacon cooking draws me out of my peaceful, relaxing slumber. I throw the covers back and make my way to the bathroom to take care of my business in order to get to the mouth-watering aroma. Over the past three weeks, we’ve all gotten into a rhythm now that we have Hendrik with us all the time. I went back to work and have been loving it. Well, at least for the most part.

Last night, we had a patient come in who rocked my world in a way I haven’t shared yet. I didn’t know how.

“Everleigh, can you take room three?” Babs, the charge nurse, asks.

“Yeah, sure, no problem,” I agree, grabbing the chart to look over what I’m dealing with. A pregnant woman, late thirties, having contractions. Simple. I close the chart and smile at Babs and Connie. The two of them have been around since well before I started, and I love working with them. They’re sweet and seem to truly love their job.

I knock on the door to room three and push the door open. “Hello, I’m Everleigh, and I will be with you for a little while,” I say, stepping into the room. My steps falter slightly as I come face to face with a man and woman I remember from years ago. But what has my heart clenching in my chest is the young boy sitting in a chair off to the side. His dark blond hair is long on one side and short on the other. Kind of like JJ’s kid onCriminal Minds. The only reason it comes to mind is that I’d been watching it last night curled up on the couch before falling asleep.

“Hey.” The woman looks up, and I see she recognizes me as well.

I blink, clear my throat, and try to keep it together. Never in a million years did I think this would happen, let alone on the L&D floor while I’m working. “Sorry, I . . . um . . . as I said, I’ll be your nurse for the next bit. We just need to get you hooked up to the monitors. Can you tell me how far along you are?” It’s all I can do to keep things professional.

The woman looks to her husband and back to me, then back to the husband. “Carl, can you take Everett out to get a drink?” she asks him.

I let the name sink in of the boy. Everett. God, that name is beautiful for the child.

Carl looks between us and gives his wife a knowing smile. “If you need me, Sofie, just send for me. We’ll be right back.”

Sofie, that’s her name. She was the nurse who my mother had take my baby away.

Oh God, I didn’t even think to look into her.

With quiet words to Everett, Carl guides the boy out of the room.

“I know who you are, Everleigh,” Sofie starts, pressing her hand over her rounded stomach.
