“What?”

“After the shit with Juniper, I looked into Everleigh and Josephine,” Styxx announces and holds out a file for me. “You’ll want to take a look at this, and I’ll tell you now, you’re not gonna like it.”

I take the folder, flip it open, and start reading over it. My stomach twists and tightens the more I go. She went to a regular school with the others, but she wasn’t allowed to do anything else. At sixteen one of the kids, she was friends with went missing after attempting to help her run away. To make matters worse, there’s a note in here about her having a kid that was taken from her at birth. And the community she and the others mention is nothing more than some sort of religious cult.

“You sure of all this?” I ask the question, though I know I don’t need to. Styxx and Scythe are thorough when it comes to this type of thing.

“Every last bit of it.” Styxx’s eyes seem to harden as he nods.

“What do you want to do, brother?” Reaper asks.

“She’s mine, and I’m not about to let her get away from me,” I grit, clenching my teeth, shifting my gaze to his. “No way am I letting her deal with this shit on her own.”

“With you there, Daemon,” my Prez mutters. “She’s trying to keep her shit from touching us and bringing it to our doorstep, but she’s already one of ours and we’ll do what it takes to help her.”

“Already know what I’m gonna do,” I inform him, grinning. “I just gotta catch up with her first.”

“I’ve got all of the systems set to notify me the moment she uses her card for anything,” Styxx says, “but the woman is smart. She sold her ATVs for cash and probably has more than just from the sale of those.”

“Meaning, she’s in the wind unless we get a tip.”

Fuck.

“Exactly,” Styxx confirms.

“We’ll find her,” Reaper mutters and reaches out to clasp a hand on my shoulder. “Until then, we do have some shit we’ve got to take care of.”

I know we do. The meet with Dusan Morozov is scheduled to happen. He’s one of the distributors we work with when it comes to the cars we steal, along with the ones we design and build ourselves. We won’t be able to put him off. He’s not just a man we work with when it comes to this part of business. He’s also an ally we don’t want to make an enemy of.

I swear, Everleigh’s timing couldn’t be worse, but regardless, I’ll find her one way or another and be there for the meet with Dusan. He might be meeting with Reaper, but the cars are my designs and I’m needed for the meeting as well.

CHAPTERFIVE

EVERLEIGH

The rain comes beating down on me and yet I refuse to go inside. It’s been a week on the road, and instead of stopping in Corpus Christi as I thought of doing, I kept going. I didn’t stop until I hit the East Coast. The only time I stopped was when I needed to fill up and the one time to rest.

Once I reached South Carolina, I decided to stop for a couple of days. I heard the weather was gonna get bad and I didn’t want to be driving through it. I figured since I stopped at a motel along the beach, I’d spend some time soaking it all in. Although, it’s not the same without my friends.

I’m sure by now, they know I’m gone. There’s no way they don’t. I only hope they don’t come looking for me as I asked them not to. I can’t let them get involved in my mess. Besides, along with them probably knowing I’ve left town, my parents and uncle know as well. And they’ll send one of the men who work underneath them for me.

A shiver runs down my spine as the wind whips around, blowing my hair out behind me away from my back. I wrap my boho purple cardigan tighter to me and stay where I sit. I’m not ready to go back inside. The motel I picked isn’t bad, but that doesn’t mean it’s the greatest either. Still, it works for what I need it for. I just want a little bit more time to watch the waves.

So many times in the past week, I’ve contemplated calling one of the girls or Daemon. Mostly Daemon. I hope he finally understands why I couldn’t let him be with me more than I already did.

God knows the very thought of something happening to him, as it did to Case, would destroy me in ways nothing else could. Having lost a part of me already, I can’t lose any more.

The wind picks up and I sigh, knowing it’s time to head inside. I stand and brush the sand from my bottom and spin on my heels to make my way up to the motel. When I decided to stop here, I knew I was going to have to use a card to secure the room, but instead of using one with my name, I used the one with Ivy’s. She’d given it to me a long time ago and said just in case it was needed. It came in handy this time around as it kept me from having to find somewhere else to stay.

I make it up to the room and pull out the key card. I wait for the door to do its unlocking thing and I get the green light to enter. As I step into the room, I immediately come to a halt at the sight that meets my eyes.

Daemon.

He’s sitting on the edge of the bed, flipping through the photo album I’d brought in with me. It’s filled with pictures of the past year. Quite a few of them are of him, him and his son, and a couple where we’re in the picture together.

“What are you doing here?” The words come out on a whispered breath.

“Could say the same thing,” he says, his eyes locked on me as he places the book on the bed next to him. He drops his gaze long enough to see that I’m soaking wet and reconnects eye contact. “Close the door, sugar.”
