The birthing suite filled with nurses and doctors of random sorts bustling around in a plethora of activity while I held still, focused on the tiny person in my arms. As they started to move the bed, I raised my head, glancing around until I found him.

Ruski leaned against the wall opposite the doorway, in the sliver of shadow he preferred. My panic slowed as my baby fell off my boob and started to snore. Ruski was still there, always there waiting, and that was what mattered.

EPILOGUE

RUSKI

The unit gathered aroundthe kitchen table, chattering while Abby slept, her baby in the cot beside her bed where she could reach through a special section to place a hand on him as they both rested. She was exhausted after the labor, and what her body had been through, but her expression was pure bliss.

I had the utmost respect for a woman who could turn what could have been a grief-stricken, traumatic life event into something beautiful.

Like her.

I swallowed hard, tucking those thoughts away to look at later. Right now, I had a different job to get through. Good thing Ace beat me to it.

“I’m retiring from the unit.” He stood straight while Helix slinked in a sorry figure eight around his ankles.

Conversation stopped around the table as every eye turned to face Lincoln Kelly.

I folded my arms over my chest and tilted my head back, not wanting to watch the emotional conflict that was coming though I knew I needed to be present for it.

“You mean you’re being posted out?” Hearts frowned, spinning a celebratory beer in his hands.

“Or promoted,” King added, smirking.

“No, he’s...out.” Joker tilted his head to one side. “But it’s not his decision.”

I raised both eyebrows. Maybe I should have given the Brit more nous credit.

“I mean I’m retiring,” Ace spoke through clenched teeth. “By choice,” he added, his head turning a fraction of an inch in my direction though he held the gaze of his staff firmly.

Joker’s attention swiveled my way, bringing King’s and Heart’s with it.

Ah, shit.

“I came with a little message.” I shrugged loosely as if to saydon’t shoot the messenger.“All I know is I’m to build a team up for a new operation.”
