“Damascus, don’t make me breathalyze you.”

I grumble and lean back into my seat. Already, I know I’m in trouble. Because there’s only one person I can call. It’s not Andrew. He left a couple days ago to head home for the holiday.

So, when we get back to the station, I give the number a call, and then I wait on the chair next to Carl’s desk in shame.

When Blair walks into the station and meets my eyes, I can clearly see the disappointment in hers.

“Wait, that doesn’t look like Jennifer,” Carl comments. Luckily, Blair is too far away for her to hear it.

“No, it sure isn’t.” I pick up my jacket and throw it over my shoulder, then I leave Carl’s desk and head over to my girlfriend, who is standing uncomfortably by the door.

“Well, this is the first time I’ve ever had to do this,” she tells me.

“Oh, come on. It’s not like I was arrested. He just had to pick me up.”

She shoots me a dirty look and walks out front. I can’t help but think of how Jennifer would’ve reacted if she had been the one to pick me up, if she were still my girlfriend. She would’ve made out with me intensely in front of the entire staff of officers, then she would’ve jumped on my back and had me carry her out the front door. She would’ve whispered in my ear or something like, “Hell, yeah, baby,” and she would’ve been happy that I took a stand.

Blair couldn’t be more the opposite.

I follow her outside and drag myself slowly behind, and she looks over her shoulder to see why I’m not catching up with her.

I had already explained to her over the phone what I had done, and why I got picked up by Carl, because she told me she refused to come get me until I did.

“What’s going on with you?” she asks, slowing her pace so she can walk beside me.

“What do you mean?”

“Imean, you can’t just go around egging people! What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Do you think the girls going into that clinic wanted to be guilt-tripped beforehand? Do you think they deserved it?”

She looks offended. “Of course not! It’s not like I’m on the protesters’ side!”

“Good, then there is no problem between us, and no reason for you to be mad at me right now.”

We reach her car, a cute little Trailblazer that apparently does well in the snow, but she doesn’t move to get inside of it. Instead, she leans against her trunk, crosses her arms, and stares at me.

“What?” I ask, not looking at her. I tilt my head back all the way up to the sky so she can see how annoyed I am. “Can I please just go home?” I feel slightly like I’m begging my mother right now.

“Are you drunk?”

This pisses me off. “No, I’m not. Thanks for thinking so.”

“Look, I don’t know what’s going on with you, or why you did that, and I don’t expect you to tell me, either. But I just…”

“You’re so much better than me. You’re too… good for me,” I tell her. “Did you know that?”

“No, but I’m starting to,” she replies, still looking like she’s really mad at me for some reason.

Good. I’m glad she’s standing her ground. I’m glad she doesn’t want to be anything like me.

She sighs and steps away from her car. “I didn’t mean that. I just know you can be so much better. I know thatyouknow you’re better than this. There are other ways to get back at people than doing things that are going to get you in trouble.”

“We can’t all be like you, Blair.”

She glowers at me. “Don’t do that, Damascus.”

I turn away from her.
