But if I know my sister well enough, I can tell she’s in a bad mood. She might be smiling, but there had been something about her tone that told me she’s not feeling the Christmas spirit.

“What’s going on with you, B?” I ask. I’m only going to get to spend so much time with her this trip, so I have to make the most of it. I love my little sister more than anything.

Blair shrugs. “When Dad and I were coming back from the store yesterday morning, I saw Damascus hanging out in the town square with his ex. The one who really messed him up.”

I cringe. Blair has talked to me nonstop about her new boyfriend on the phone, but the way she makes it sound, Damascus seems like a moody, depressed, bad boy. I didn’t think that was Blair’s type.

“That’s horrible,” I say. “Did you find out why they were together?”

Blair shakes her head and yawns. I wonder if she even got any sleep last night. “No. I haven’t exactly talked to him yet. I was already mad at him for something else, and now it seems like a bunch of little things are starting to pile up.”

“We haven’t even gotten to meet him yet,” Dad informs me. At nearly seven feet, my dad towers over pretty much everybody we meet. He’s the person I get my model-esque figure from. Poor Blair got the short end of the stick. Literally.

“No?” I ask.

Blair shrugs again. “I was going to have him come over today, but now I don’t think I want to see him.”

“Are you sure?”

“I don’t want to let him ruin my Christmas. Or my time with you,” she says. Then she grins at me and changes the subject. “So, now can we start opening presents?”

* * *

We’re morethan halfway through getting everything opened, and I’m loving every second of watching my sister and my parents open the incredible gifts I had mailed to the house before coming. I love the fact that I can afford to buy them pretty much whatever they want. It’s way more exciting than anythingtheycould giveme. I spoiled my family this year with the newest electronic gadgets, then I gave Blair tickets to a music festival, and I bought my parents a cruise. They were so excited that they jumped up and down and smothered me in hugs.

“I’m going to feel like such an old lady on a cruise ship!” Mom cries as Blair goes to unwrap another gift.

My mother is definitely not one to fit the fifty-year-old woman stereotype, but she has always wanted to go on a cruise.

Somebody knocks on the front door, and all of us stop opening gifts and look over at it.

“If that is who I think it is, I’m not speaking to him,” Blair snaps. I eagerly get to my feet. I’m very curious to meet Blair’s new boyfriend.

BRENNAN

“What the hell?!”

I snap my eyes open. For a moment, I forget where I am. All I know is that I apparently slept on the floor.

“Get out of my house!”

Confused and barely awake, I raise my head and see Leah curled up in a ball on the yellow sofa that I’m lying in front of. Then I realize we are inside her house, and it isherwho is yelling atme.

“I’m serious, Brennan! Get out!” she shouts.

I quickly sit myself up and grab my t-shirt off the floor. Then I throw it over my head as I get to my feet, and she gets to hers, too.

She’s furious, for some reason, still wearing the outfit she wore last night, her hair a brown, tangled mess. Right now, she looks a little bit like she’s about to take a swing at me.

“Leah?” I try, suddenly on high alert. “What’s wrong?”

“What’swrong?!” she repeats, clutching her hair and tugging it. “You’re in myhouse! You’re shirtless and sleeping in my house!”

“Okay?”

She steps away from me. “I—last night! How did this even happen? I don’t remember anything!”
