“What we’retryingto tell you all is that Malcolm and I got married!” she almost squeals, thrusting out her long, boney hand. A simple but thick gold band, proclaiming her the good Doctor’s wife.

“You’re… married,” Steve says, sounding flat at first, but his mouth soon shifts to a smile, and he finally laughs aloud, hugging them both until I’m sure I hear their joints crack.

Luke and Jayden, sensing more hugs, make a run for it. Out the door before I can stop them. Steve, Malcolm, and Sister O’Halloran, Molly, are in a world of hugs and emotions of their own.

I’ve got another one coming, too.

I ask myself.

I’m gonna need eyes in the back of my head and an extra set of arms, I reason.

But finding myself joining the group hug and hearing how our romance inspired the aging couple to tie the knot, I also know that Luke and Jayden are safe.

I know we’re in the second safest place, and although boys will be boys, they won’t go too far.

“My dear, why the tears?” Sister O’Halloran asks me, taking me by the arm and sitting me down, taking little Porter in her arms as I pull Millie close.

“It’s just all so perfect,” I sniff. Letting everyone know I’m crying happy tears, not sad ones.

“We never asked,” I tell Malcolm and Sister O’Halloran. “But I know Steve, and I would be honored if you’d be godparents to our next child?”

“Next child?” Steve pipes in, getting on one knee and taking the old nun’s hand in his.

“I was gonna ask you, and now Malcolm, if you’d be godparents to all our children. You’re not the mom I never had, but you’re the angel who watched over me until I found my own,” he says, reaching for my hand too.

Squeezing it as I realize for the millionth time just how much and why I love my husband the way I do.

Once all the big news has been cleared up, and Luke and Jayden finally reappear, looking bored, Sister O’Halloran asks about our plans for Christmas day.

“I was thinking, seeing as Holly’s so jolly and big looking, maybe she could play Mrs. Clause, and instead of that personal assistant of yours, Steve, you could be Mr. Clause.”

“What do you think about that?”

The kids are politely quiet, and Sister O’Halloran looks at us both with a raised brow.

Neither of us means to, but we break out laughing so hard at the idea of the memories of our own annual attempts at the same.

“What’s so funny,” Molly says sharply.

“Nothing,” Steve promises her. “Holly and I would love to, wouldn’t we Mrs. Clause?” he asks me with a cheeky grin.

“I’m sure it’ll be a night even you couldn’t forget,” I reply, whispering ``I love you after he’s leaned over to kiss me.

“I love you more, angel. My Christmas Holly. More and more every day.”
