I shifted, hugging my bag closer. Without missing a beat, Wolf was right back in his food. He faced me. “I need a fake girlfriend for appearances. A smokescreen as I get back into things after last year.”

“Last year?”

“You know, for someone who reports the news, you’re really fucking unaware about shit,” he stated, annoyance gruff in his voice, and I considered that a win. I liked that I got to him. He got to me, so yes, I liked that. He pointed his fork at me. “You didn’t know about Legacy, and now you’re telling me you don’t know I was out of school most of last year.”

That was because my entire world didn’t revolve around him. And why would it? I’d been in high school when he’d been here, and I didn’t report the news. At least, not in the way he was saying. “Why on earth would I know that you weren’t here last year?”

“Because it’s news. Stuff regarding my friends and me relevant.” His brow lifted slow. “Everyone in this fucking campus is in our business. Everyone talks, and you, as a new freshman, have a job to make yourself aware.”

“Why?”

“For starters, to keep yourself out of trouble.” His fork touched the plate, his eyebrows narrowed. “You step on the wrong toes in this place, you get hurt.”

Something I was figuring out now. Though, I obviously hadn’t known it.

Wolf had had coffee come with his meal, and he got a fill-up when the guy came around. The server called him Mr. Mallick before he left this time, and he was a college kid like us. What the fuck? My eyes shifted to Wolf. “Why were you out?”

“Personal reasons,” he said, scarfing another bite of food. He ate quicker for some reason, barely taking a breath before shoveling in more. He swallowed. “And before you ask, nah. They aren’t your business.”

Well, sorry.

“Just know I wasn’t here. Left in the middle of fall semester.” Finally finishing what was on his plate, he sat back. “It was rather abrupt, and like I said, people talk. It was bad then, but it’s even worse now that I’m back. I got people andbitchesall over me all the time.”

Again, arrogant much. I shrugged. “Yeah, no idea what that has to do with me.”

“I told you why. I need a smokescreen. I take school seriously, and with me being behind, I don’t need any distractions this year. Needless to say, pussy hasn’t been hard to come by since I’ve been back. It never is, but that shit’s basically breaking down my fucking door these days.”

Jesus, this dude.

“I don’t need any of that shit right now, and a fake girlfriend will alleviate the problem.”

Smirking, I shook my head at him. “You’re a piece of work.”

“And you got a mouth.” He got in my face, woods and apple pie hitting me again. I followed those freckles along his nose once more, real close but I wasn’t backing down. This guy liked to push but I did too. His expression darkened. “But also fortunately for you that’s what I’m looking for. I can’t have a weak girlfriend. Wouldn’t be believable, so you fit the bill.”

Surely, though, a follower bitch could take some direction. I mean, if he was as popular as he said, that shouldn’t be a problem. Not to mention, they’d actually look like they belonged together. Wolf and I couldn’t look any more different. He was taller than me by well over a foot. Maybe even two and looked like he should be modeling on a beach somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. I wasn’t quite sure of his ethnicity, and the ambiguity certainly had him ticking all the boxes regarding the universal standard of beauty.

He might have even invented it.

Needless to say, that wasn’t me, nor did I desire that. I was just me, and I liked me. I was average, but I was okay with that.

Because I was, though, that certainly set off some red flags here. I folded my arms. “What’s your angle?”

“Angle?” This guy really didn’t like to be questioned, the word snipped, terse. “What are you talking about?”

“I mean, why me.” I gestured between us. “We don’t exactly look like we belong together.”

That much was obvious and his look of confusion had me agitated now. He lounged back. “Not sure why you’d say that.”

Why wasn’t he saying it? I laughed. “Come on, Wolf. I’m not some idiot.”

“Actually,Fawn. I’m beginning to question that,” he stated, pissing me off more. He folded his hands. “And what the fuck would you know about the kind of girls I hang with? Especially since you’ve clearly been living in a fucking cave since you got here.”

“I know they probably all look like models,” I shot, and rather than be insulted, I stood up. I shouldered my camera bag. “So, until you stop taking me for that idiot, I think we’re done here.”

Leaving was probably pretty stupid considering what he had on me, but I’d always been hotheaded.

I guess he knew that.
