And she was lucky she walked away.

She headed over to Heath, getting in on the conversations he was having.

I found Kurt instead.

* * *

I watched Red for the better half of the afternoon, doing that between actually operating this whole event. I did more networking than anything, my other objective for this event outside of getting Fawn down here. My name tied to this drew people from the art community, my background semi-prolific. I wasn’t anything like my father in that regard, but people knew me. Knew my stuff.

If anything, I needed practice networking. I wasn’t used to that side of the art world, but I needed to get used to it. It was necessary with the changes I found myself making in my life as of late.

Red looked like she was done.

She’d been getting advice from Kurt the whole afternoon, snapping shots, and I let her. I thought I wouldn’t. Not with that shit she’d said, but I did want things to be different.

They had to be.

I couldn’t mess up this time, and I had to hand it to her. Me being around only threw her off partially. She was professional, focused, and it was only when I was feet away from her that she actually acknowledged my presence. I wasn’t doing any spray-painting, but I was advising the kids and their teachers. Teaching had never really been my thing, but I’d worked with some of the best in the world, and there was evidence of my labor out there. I had pieces displayed on several continents. Basically, I’d done my thing in the past, and people liked to pay for it.

My hands worked at my sides. Grunting, I massaged them a bit, and Kurt approached. He had Fawn and Heath in tow.

I handed the supplies I had over to some of the kids. Since this was my idea, I made sure they had everything they needed outside of advisement.

I noticed Fawn and Heath pair off from Kurt, as he came over. The two studied the back of their cameras, and I figured they were going over their shots.

“Got everything you need?” I asked Kurt, glancing away from the two. I still didn’t like that fucking dude with her, but I smiled at Kurt. “For the feature, I mean?”

He was doing me a solid by coming down today, and though this had been a scheme to get to Fawn, I was glad I’d done it. I related to these kids, more than related to them. Shit could get real dark sometimes in life, and art, creation was definitely a great way to heal it.

I knew this from personal experience.

My hands worked again, and Kurt grinned in Fawn and Heath’s direction.

“We did,” he said, answering my previous question. “I had Fawn and Heath do most of the work. Both take great advisement, and I’ll definitely put in a good word for Heath when he needs it. He expressed some interest in the film and television sector, and I told him I had some contacts he could definitely reach out to.”

Yeah, didn’t fucking care about that. “How’d Fawn do?”

I was acting like I cared. Like she hadn’t fucking pissed me off before by saying she’d never be friends with me in any type of normal capacity.

Why the fuck do you care?

I braced my arms, and Kurt smiled again.

“Excellent, and thank you again for recommending her. For the internship?” His chin lifted. “I probably would have missed her if not for your insight. These internships are in high demand. I’m sure you can imagine.”

I glanced back at Fawn, my eyes on her.

“She’s certainly gifted like her father,” Kurt said.

Fawn started to come over then, and I let go of the conversation with Kurt. Other things were priority, like trying to make Fawn fucking talk to me.

Having Kurt here as an incentive definitely helped, and I gripped the man’s arm. “How about dinner, Kurt? The least I can do for you coming over from New York.”

“That would be amazing, Ares. Fawn? Heath?” Kurt questioned, the pair of them blinking. He smiled. “You should come along with us, and I’ll buy for everyone. You kids are in school and shouldn’t have to worry about it.”

He knew I had no reason to worry, but he was obviously trying to be nice for the sake of Fawn and Heath.

Heath’s mouth parted. “That would be amazing.”
