“You don’t have to answer that,” he said, hugging me closer. My stomach warmed again despite myself, but he let go to hug his mom. “Have a safe trip.”

“Thanks, and good meeting you, Fawn.” When she eased away from him, she took my hand. “And please don’t let him convince you out of a visit. No matter what he says, his parents are wonderful people and would love to have you over.”

She elbowed him after she said it, and his eyes rolled back. He shook his head, and she tugged him to bend so she could give him a kiss on the cheek. He did, which made me smile but him sigh. He mocked fake agitation for sure. Anyone could see how much he cared about his mom, loved her.

By this point, I was nearly to the front of the line, and I ordered while Wolf said his final goodbyes to his mother. I started to pay, but he cut me off before I could.

I watched a silver card pass over the register, something I didn’t need but I let him. “Thanks.”

“No problem.” He kept his distance beside me now, his mom gone and all that. I tried not to think about how it felt to be that close to him again, and instead focused on his lingering presence.

“Your mom seems nice.”

“She is, but believe me she takes no shit.” He cuffed his thick arms. “And thanks for what you did. Why did you?”

Meaning why did I go along with our fake agreement. I shrugged. “Just because I’m mad at you doesn’t mean your mom should suffer for it. She believes, so why complicate things?”

I noticed I was tiptoeing around words in front of others, and people were looking at us. Wolf being Legacy, that was just what people did, and for some reason, I was still playing the game.

“Mad at me, huh?” Wolf cocked his head, his expression curious. He’d stepped out of line with me, and I had to wait for my drink. He angled back against the counter. “Like a real argument in this new relationship.”

He was tiptoeing around words too.

Why are we still doing this?

Sighing, I took my coffee, and Wolf proceeded to follow me to the creamer. This was better anyway. We could actually talk without prying ears. I took the lid off my cup. “I think you and I both know there’s nothing normal about this relationship.”

“Yeah.”

He watched me add cream, my awareness of this guy truly unsettling. I decided to redirect, stirring my coffee. “What are you going to tell your parents?”

“Tell them?”

I nodded. “You obviously weren’t going to bring me down to see them. You didn’t even tell me.”

“You would have gone?”

No, but him not telling me was an indicator I was never going. “I guess we’ll never know.”

I had no idea why I said that, or why I was even still talking to him. I mean, I’d thought this game with him was over, but every time it ended, weird shit just kept pulling me back. Shit like his mom being around and me not wanting to blow this whole thing out of the water in front of her.

Things were awkward now, and I finished stirring my coffee. Normally, I’d take a beat and drink it. Especially since it was raining outside.

But with Wolf here…

I released a breath. “See you.”

I didn’t wait for his response, edging by him. I brushed up against him, but I ignored that shit too.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“What?”

“About the car thing.”

I paused, my hand gripping my coffee, my umbrella.

Heat hit behind me. His heat. I wasn’t sure how close Wolf had gotten, but if I could feel him, his presence…
