That would be because I haven’t had any sleep. “I’m okay. Just trying to adjust to life here.”
“You really think a bullshit answer like that is going to work with me. Something is up.”
“It’s nothing you need to worry about.”
He narrowed his eyes. “When you start hiding things from me, it’s always something to worry about.”
“You took your time telling me how you felt about TJ.”
“That’s…” He blew out an exasperated breath. “Fine, but I did tell you.”
“Yeah, you did.”
“And I hope you’re going to tell me whatever is going on with you before you end up in serious trouble.”
“It’s nothing bad.”
“But it is something. You admit that now.”
“There’s a guy, okay. I met him a few days ago, and I’m enjoying being with him.”
“Who is this guy?”
“You don’t need to vet him. I know how to take care of myself.”
Rhys scowled. “I want to know more before you leave.”
“You do realize I survived for years with you halfway around the world, and for all that time no one checked out the men and women I was with.”
Rhys snorted. “Maybe I couldn’t be here to do that, but I worried every damn day.”
“Then why did you leave for so long?”
I knew the answer. He’d needed to run as badly as I had. He and Grant chose the military, and I chose to take my chances with the rodeo. In their minds, they made a superior choice, but we were all risking our lives and trying to forget the hell we’d been through.
Just because their risks had been government sanctioned didn’t make it any easier for me. “You think I didn’t worry about you? Most of the time I didn’t even know where you were or when I’d get to talk to you.”
“Come here.” Rhys opened his arms, and I let him pull me into a hug. “Promise me you’ll be careful today, and that if you keep seeing this guy, you’ll introduce me.”
“I promise.” That would be interesting as hell, but it would never happen. Ghost would be leaving once the business with the Russos was done.
“You know you can call me anytime you need something.”
“I don’t need you coming in, guns blazing, trying to kill the guy I’m hooking up with.”
Rhys rolled his eyes. “If he hurts you, I will take him out.”
“Same goes for TJ.”
Rhys grinned. “I think he’s scared of you.”
“He damn well should be.”
“Get on out of here before Grant gets up. You know he’ll interrogate you even more than me.”
“True, but I also have a better chance of fooling him.”
“What’s the point of having a twin if you can’t read each other’s minds?”
I huffed. “I don’t want to read your mind right now. You’re probably thinking about TJ and all the filthy things you intend to do with him.”
“You’re always the one willing to share the details.”
I shook my head. “I know him too well.”
I was glad we couldn’t actually read each other’s thoughts, even if we could always sense how the other felt. The last thing I needed was Rhys knowing I was scared to death. I was falling for Ghost. He was going to break my heart when he went away, and instead of trying to shield myself, I was heading right into danger.
Ghost was waiting for me near the spot where we’d met a few nights ago. He’d spent the previous day investigating Teddy and arguing with the agent in charge of the investigation.
We had several hours before the meetup was scheduled. As it was, I was sure I was dragging Teddy out of bed far earlier than he wanted to be, but he wasn’t going to turn down an opportunity to please the Russos, no matter how early I told him to meet me. If he could deliver an FBI agent into their hands, he might actually have a chance of moving up in the ranks.
“Am I really going to have to meet your team?” I asked after Ghost had greeted me with a kiss that made me wish I could take him to bed rather than to the meeting place I’d arranged with Teddy.
“I’m afraid so. We have to go over our plan and make sure everything is set up.”
“What is our plan?”
“We’re going to figure that out as we drive.”
We talked through options and ended up deciding our best chance was to go in making it look like I really was handing Ghost over, then spring a frontal attack on Teddy and anyone he brought with him.
Once we were at the meeting place, we were going to have to assess the situation quickly, and our timing needed to be perfect. Teddy was an idiot, but he also looked out for himself. There was no way he would meet me on his own. I just hoped he wasn’t going for overkill. If he brought a couple guys with him for protection, Ghost and I could take care of them. If there were more men, especially if they were highly skilled, I wasn’t as confident things would go in our favor.
