“What about the guy you work with, the one with medical training who helped us before?”

Ghost shook his head. “I don’t want to involve him unless I have to, but I would like some water.”

Why hadn’t I thought of that? “Have you had anything to eat or drink since this happened?”

“No.”

“Jesus. I’ll get you some water, and you’re going to drink it slowly.”

“I know how to take care of myself.”

I looked down at his foot and back up. “Right. Of course you do.”

“Don’t scold me. Jumping was the only way to save myself. I didn’t want to die without seeing you again.”

Did he really have to make my heart flutter right now? “At least you’re feeling well enough to flirt.”

Ghost rolled his eyes. “I’m going to be fine.”

Realistically, I knew that, but he looked so exhausted and so sad. It was going to take some time, but I was determined to fix things between us.

Grant and Rhys showed up while Ghost was sipping from a bottle of water I’d found in the mini fridge.

Grant was on the phone with X. “Are you up to talking?” he asked Ghost.

Ghost nodded, and Grant handed him the phone. We all listened as Ghost gave an explanation of what had happened to him, including waking up in a stolen car unsure where he was and managing to make his way to Blade’s cabin, seeing a light on, and knocking, hoping one of us was there. The next thing he remembered was waking up on the mattress in the shed.

He handed the phone back to Grant when he’d finished his explanation. Rhys had started examining his foot, and now that Ghost was off the phone, Rhys began unwrapping it. I offered Ghost my hand, and he squeezed it so hard I thought he might break my fingers.

“Wow, you really did a number on your foot,” Rhys said.

“I guess that’s what happens when you drop out of the loft of a warehouse.”

I sucked in my breath. “What the hell were you doing there with no backup?”

“No one was ready to make a move, and I wanted the op finished, so I went in on my own.”

“Thank God there wasn’t concrete under you.”

“I probably would’ve survived that.”

Rhys just rolled his eyes. “You need an x-ray.”

Ghost shook his head.

“Just say you fell off a roof. It might sound strange, but there’s no bullet wounds, so no one’s going to ask too many questions.”

“We’re taking you to the ER. That’s final.”

He looked up at me and smiled, and it was the first time I was able to take a deep breath since Blade had come to the door.

I’d warned Ghost from the beginning that while I might want him in control in bed, I was going to take control sometimes. This was one of them. No way in hell was he walking around on broken bones.

“I’ll take him,” Rhys said. “You stay here and—”

“No.” That came from Grant. I stared at him, stunned. “Rogue should be the one to take him.”

Rhys scowled. “I have things to say to Ghost.”

“There will be plenty of time for that once he’s back.”

“Will there?” Rhys asked. “How do we know he’ll even be back?”

“I will be,” Ghost said. “I learned my fucking lesson. I’m quitting the FBI, and you’re not going to be able to get rid of me.”

“What?” I stared at him. “Are you serious?”

He winced as he sat up. “Yes. Very.”

“TJ, you go with them,” Grant said. “Rhys and I will work with X.”

I frowned. “I can handle this myself.”

“You could, but I know how you are when you’re in full-on protector mode. TJ will be there in case you get yourself in trouble with the hospital staff.”

“As long as they give Ghost the care he needs, there won’t be any reason for me to be mad at them.”

TJ chuckled. “I’ll ride along just in case.”

We waited for-fucking-ever in the ER. TJ had to keep me from continually going to the desk and demanding they take Ghost back right away.

Ghost reminded me that he’d injured himself nearly twelve hours ago and another few hours wasn’t going to make it worse.

“I just want to know how badly you’ve torn your foot up and how hard I’m going to have to fight you to make you listen to instructions so it can heal.”

TJ snorted. “You’re one to talk. I’ve heard how well you listened to what your doctors told you about all your bull-riding injuries.”

“I had to get back in the ring. That was my job. Ghost is quitting his job, and even if he weren’t, his job actually has medical leave.”

“The official part of my job does. The unofficial shit—”

“X better not think he’s going to send you on some job when you’re injured.”

TJ chuckled. “It so good to see someone else dealing with one of the Stanton brothers.”
