“Wait here.” Rob climbs off the bed and disappears into the bathroom.

“I couldn’t move if I tried.” I languish in the bed, unable to move my limbs after such an earthshattering climax.

He chuckles from the other room. When he returns, he cleans me with a warm rag and rejoins me. Tucking me against him, he sighs in contentment.

“Why don’t we stay home tomorrow?” I muse, half asleep and sex-drunk. “We can stay in bed all day and fuck each other senseless.”

“That sounds like a great idea.” He groans. “But I have to work.”

“What time?”

“Three.”

“We have all morning then.” I snuggle closer.

“We have our whole lives.” He quickly adds, “If that’s what you want. No pressure.”

My response lodges in my throat.

It is what I want, but I’ve been alone for so long, I can’t jump into something so quickly. Can I?

With Rob by my side, I can do anything. The soft, steady breaths against my shoulder tell me I don’t have to answer him tonight. He’s fast asleep.

I stare at the wall, wondering what happens next. Is this too good to last?

Chapter Twenty-Four

Rob

We spend half the day in bed, wrapped in each other and sheltered from the realities of the world outside. It’s heaven, and I never want to leave.

Until I get a call from Arthur at noon. Richards has the reports on Vic Simmons and our witness from the restaurant. He wants to meet and discuss them at the Black Penny.

My call into work leaves my superiors shorthanded, but after all the hours I pulled this week, they can find someone to fill in for me this time. If things go well, I won’t be working there much longer anyway. Now that I have Marcy, I have bigger plans that don’t include working doubles in the ER.

I press a kiss to Marcy’s forehead, and she pulls me in for one last drugging kiss before I leave. She’s not thrilled about being left behind, but Kate offered to go with her to the meeting with the lawyer. We’ll meet up with them there.

Downstairs, Arthur’s waiting for me by a shiny black town car. Cyril gives me a wave from the driver’s side. Must be nice to have one’s own personal driver in this city. No subway. No taxis. No walking. Just...onward, Cyril.

I slide into the back beside Arthur. “What’s the game plan?”

“Richards has the information. We’ll meet him first, then head over to Marcy’s lawyer.”

“What time?”

“Five.” He glances at his watch. “I’ve already given the lawyer an update with the new information. He agrees she should lay low for a while, but she needs to file a formal complaint today to get the charges started. With this, we’ll have enough ammunition to get this guy more than a slap on the wrist.”

“He deserves a lot more than that,” I grumble, leaning back against the seat. “I don’t think this is the first time he’s done it.”

“You’re probably right.” Arthur watches the city pass outside the window.

For the rest of the drive, we’re silent. My mind churns over the information, again and again. Personally, I’d like nothing more than to make this asshole disappear forever, but that goes against every ethos I have. This needs to be methodical and focused. I don’t want him or the paparazzi coming after Marcy. I just want it over.

When we reach the Black Penny, Claude waves us toward the back where Richards is waiting for us. I slide into the booth across from him, and Arthur takes the space beside me.

“I did some digging, and it took some sweet-talking to get the tyrant in records to release this shit.” Richards’s eyes flicker with amusement. “Looks like your boy here has a long history of taking things that don’t belong to him. Three rape charges, two assaults, and one breaking and entering.”

“Holy shit.” I run my hand across my jaw as I skim through the reports. My instincts on this asshole were spot-on. “Has he ever been convicted?”
