“He killed himself! And rightly so after what he had done. He killed his own parents and would have killed Bella if it wasn’t for Damien.” My mum shouts, standing and confronting him. He kicks a chair in anger so I instinctively duck wrapping my arms around my stomach, protecting my baby. I hear the café door swing open with a bang, I look up to see Shane being pulled out of the café quicker than his feet can carry him. He’s dragged around the side of the building. A minute later he appears scrabbling to his feet and running away, with what looks like two black eyes and a burst lip. Our driver then appears and comes into the café.

“Are you ok Bella? Did he hurt you?”

“No, I’m fine thank you. Just a bit shook up that’s all.”

“Damien is on his way.” Of course he his. And of course, our driver for the day isn’t just a driver. He is our bodyguard.

The waitress comes over to check we are alright and mum orders us some pots of tea.

“A cup of tea with 2 sugars will calm your nerves.” she says to us both. Mum has insisted our driver sits down with us too. Mum is very grateful to our driver whose name is Frank. Mum thinks he is still just a driver who saw the commotion and came to our rescue. There’s no point correcting her, it would make her worry.

Damien arrives shortly after.

“Bella are you ok? I think we should go to the hospital to get you and the baby checked out.”

“Damien, I am fine and so is the baby.” He worries so much. “It was an old friend of Johns, he is obviously still upset about losing him and needs someone to blame.”

Damien nods and goes outside with Frank leaving dad with us.

“Well, I am glad you two ladies are ok. It was all very rushed. One minute we were in the clubhouse having a pint, the next Damien’s phone pings and we are in his car doing hundreds of miles per hour, that car can really move.”

“Yes, I think we have all had enough excitement for one day. Let’s get Bella home.” Mum ushers us both to get up.

When we get back to mum and dads I go for a bath. I think about what Shane said. When Damien rescued me, he told the police that John had heard him enter the house, so knowing his time was up John had killed himself. I have never asked Damien if that is what really happened. I am not sure if I want to know. I hate that John can still upset me. I need to not let him anymore. They say babies can feel what their mother feels. I’m not sure I believe it, but even so. I will not let John or anyone else upset my baby. We have had lovely day and I will not let anything spoil it.

I get dried and go downstairs. When I enter the lounge the talking stops and they all look at me with sympathetic faces. I don’t like it.

“So did mum show you what we got today?” I say brightly

“No, I was waiting for you.” Mum smiles.

“Ok well let’s get it all out and have another look.” I go to the hallway where all our shopping bags are, Damien helps me bring them into the lounge.

“Blooming heck, did you buy the whole shop?” Dad laughs

“This isn’t all of it Henry, a lot of things we had to order, they will be delivered to Bella and Damien’s house.”

That night we have a Chinese takeaway and watch a film on dads dodgy TV box. It’s another evening of love, laughter, and more memories made. The day’s excitement with Shane was long forgotten.

Damien

It’s Monday and we are Driving home back to London. It’s been a good weekend apart from the incident yesterday. Thankfully I had Frank there keeping an eye on them. It doesn’t seem to have phased Bella though, she is happily flicking through the baby and wedding brochures she picked up with her mum.

“Have you thought about a date or a season you would like to get married in Damien?”

“Yes. What date is it today?”

“Umm, It’s the 25th.”

“Then the 25th.”

“So the 25th, a year today, yes I am happy with that.”

“No.”

“No?”

“Not the 25thnext year. The 25thtoday.”
