“I think I’m just confused, Carter,” I explained. “That night at the hot water heater, you said we’re not friends. Then you’re all buddy-buddy with my son at the pizza place. Then we’re kissing—”

“I get it.”

“I don’t know what’s going on here.”

“I know. I like you, Zoe. A lot.”

I could feel thebutcoming on.Butyou’re too old for me.Butyou’re going through a divorce.Butyou have a kid.

“But I don’t want to disappoint you,” he finally said.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that… I’m not a serious guy.”

I raised an eyebrow, still not getting it.

“I mean I’m not the boyfriend type. I’m not the long-term relationship type. I’m not… I’m not that guy,” he explained. “I’m down for a good time. But that’s really all I know how to offer a woman.”

Sasha’s words were on repeat in my mind.Tell him you’re down. Down for whatever.

“I don’t mean to offend you or anything,” he said. “I just wanted to be honest."

“It’s fine. Let’s just… go home.”

Carter nodded and hopped on his motorcycle, handing me the helmet.

He said he was down for a good time. Did that mean what I thought it did? Was that him saying he wanted to hook up with me?

I slid behind Carter on his bike. There was no way around getting close to him. So close I could feel the heat coming off of him.

“You might want to put your arms around my waist,” he said, his voice low. “For safety.”

“Yeah. Safety.”

I wrapped my arms around him, trying hard not to give in and press my chest against his back. He smelled good. Like some kind of woodsy soap.

He started the motorcycle and pulled out onto the street. I felt something pulse between my legs and a knot forming in my core.

It wasn’t just from the bike.

I believed honesty was the best policy, but I was pushing it with what I’d just said to Zoe. I basically told her that I wanted to sleep with her. And that it was all I wanted from her. Not the classiest thing I could have said.

I mean, it was the truth. But saying it to Zoe… honestly, I felt like an ass.

And, unfortunately, I had the whole ride back to the condo to think about it. A ride where Zoe’s curvy thighs were wrapped around me. I inhaled the scent of her perfume. Perfume that she put on for another guy, but I liked it nonetheless. The short dress and the heels were for him too, even though he didn’t deserve them.

I stopped at a red light and Zoe’s chest pressed up against my back. Every time she wrapped herself around me tighter, I felt something rush though my body. Excitement. Want. Lust.

By the time we got to the condos, I was totally on edge. I let out a shaky breath and helped her off the motorcycle, offering her my hand.

“Thanks, Carter,” she said.

“Sure.”
