“When I was nineteen, I was dumb enough to let my ex-boyfriend tattoo something misspelled on me,” I told him. “And I have stretch marks. No one’s ever seen them besides my ex-husband because, well… I got them having our child.”

“Zoe—”

“And I’m thirty-four years old. I know that’s notoldold, but I’m not—”

“Zoe, you’re gorgeous,” he said, cutting me off. “And I’m sorry no one’s been telling you that enough lately, but you are. Stunning, actually. I thought it from the moment I saw you.”

“You don’t have to—”

“I wouldn’t have invited you in if I didn’t want you here.”

“I know, but…” I stammered. “Ugh, this is so frustrating. I barged in here like Party Zoe ready to bang the hot guy and then remembered that I’m supposed to be Mature Zoe who doesn’t do reckless things anymore because she’s supposed to be a responsible grown up.”

“Responsible grown up is totally overrated.”

“I know. Except that if don’t prove that I can be one—”

“Zoe, if you want to go, I understand. I won’t stop you,” he said, hesitantly. “But I’m pretty sure you’re not going to get any responsible adult stuff done tonight. So, hear me out.”

I took another look at Carter, forcing myself not to stare at the lines in his abs that cut over his hip bones and disappeared into his jeans.

“Spend the night with me.” He closed the distance between us. “Let me make you feel good tonight.” He lowered his voice to something deep and sexy. His lips hovered right above my ear. “And, in the morning, I’ll help you finish painting Rex’s room.”

I wanted to laugh. “You really know how to charm a girl, don’t you?”

“A promise of home repair works every time.”

He placed his hands on my waist and kissed my temple.

“I like that you can fix things,” I said, nearly breathless, my words taking on all sorts of meanings.

Carter leaned in again and kissed me, almost like he was trying to kiss some life back into me. He threaded his hands through my hair, holding me close as he parted my lips with his tongue. I felt that kiss that I felt course through my whole body, all the way down to my toes. It was the kind of kiss that I could get addicted to.

When it broke and he pulled back slightly, a little whine escaped me. He chuckled and smoothed my hair behind my ear.

“I can fix anything, Zoe,” he whispered. “But I don’t think anything is really broken.”

I was about to lean in and kiss her, but she beat me to it.

She kissed me like the ship was going down. A soft moan escaped her and it sent a rush through me. I was hard as steel under my jeans and I knew she could feel it. I wanted her to feel it. I wanted her knowing what she was doing to me in that little dress.

I lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist. I ran my hands up her thighs greedily, letting them disappear under her skirt. I slipped a finger under the lacy edge of her panties.

She ran her tongue along mine and tugged at my hair. It’s rare that a woman surprises me, but Zoe did with that move. She was dirty. And I was into it.

“Fuck,” I groaned.

She pulled back. “What? Too much?”

Her lips were pink and puffy. Pupils blown. Breathless.

“No. Fuck, no. Keep going.”

She kissed me like that was a challenge, like she was trying to suck my tongue or siphon the air from my lungs. I carried her to my bed and laid her down. I broke the kiss for just a second to look at her. Eyes closed. Lips parted. She arched her back and whispered my name, blonde hair fanned out around her.
