I smiled. He did too. He had a dimple in his left cheek that I don’t think I’d noticed before. It made him look shy, which was a different look for Carter Kane.

We grew quiet, but the silence between us wasn’t uncomfortable. We laughed about it.

“See, we already can’t think of anything to say to each other,” he teased.

“I know.” I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear, my fingers shaking as I did. “But I’m still glad we’re doing it.”

“Me too.”

As we atedinner and drank the wine, Carter and I finally found our rhythm.

“If you were on a desert island and you could only bring five movies with you, what would they be?” he asked.

“This question always confuses me.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I mean, if I’ve got the technology to play movies, don’t I have the technology to call for help and get off the island?” I mused. “Like, if I have streaming services, I have the internet. I can contact someone.”

“Not if all you’ve got is DVDs and a player.”

“Oh. Right. Old school.”

“So quit stalling and answer the question,” he chided, with a sly smile. “Let me judge your entire personally and make sweeping assessments about your life by your taste in movies.”

“Ooh, no pressure, huh?”

“Not a lick.”

“Okay,” I said, thinking about it. “Ooh, I think my all-time favorite movie isThe Wedding Singer.”

“Really?”

“Yes, absolutely. It’s the perfect combination of romantic and goofy. Not to mention, true love wins.”

“True.”

“And for the other four, I pick…You’ve Got Mail, Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You,and…My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

“Hm… not surprised.”

“What do you mean?”

“I had you pegged as a rom-com kind of girl.”

I shrugged. “I like what I like. And I like happy endings.”

“Nothing wrong with that.”

“Hm…”

“What?”

“Nothing, I just… after being married to someone who made fun of my movie choices for so long… I thought you were going to laugh at me.”

“I wouldn’t do that.”

“I know.”
