I grab my clutch off the kitchen counter and give her a quick peck on the cheek. Then I’m crossing the kitchen until I can see down the hall to the front door. Sebastian stands on my front step, wearing a white button-down that’s open at the throat and tucked into dark-wash jeans. His rich brown cowboy boots poke out from the bottom of them, subtle but always there. His face is clean-shaven today, but the shadow of his stubble still remains.

And his eyes—his eyes are clear, light blue, heated through with need. They stop me right in my tracks.

He clears his throat. “Wow.”

“Are you going out with him?” Alec asks.

I blink, seeing my nephew for the first time. He’s still holding the door open, staring at me.

“Yes,” I answer.

“You look pretty, Auntie Georgia.”

I smile. “Thank you, Alec. Can you go check to see if your mom needs help?”

“Okay. Are you taking your scooter? It’ll mess up your hair.”

“We’re taking Sebastian’s truck,” I answer, glancing at the truck in my driveway.

“Oh.” Alec peers around Sebastian’s hip to make sure. “That’s good.”

“Go on,” I tell him gently. “Be good.”

Alec takes off at a sprint, and I’m alone with Sebastian. He holds out his hand to me and guides me out of the house. Pavers dot the gravel path, and Sebastian smiles as I make sure to step from one to the other. His boots crunch on the gravel as he guides me over to his truck.

“You look too good to be sitting in my old truck,” he says when we reach it, guiding me to the passenger side.

“I happen to like your old truck.”

A sharp, quick grin, and then his arms are around me and his lips are on mine. He kisses me hard and quick, sending liquid heat tumbling through my body.

“My sister will see,” I say, breathless.

“Does she still hate me?” He touches my nose with his, ducking his head to kiss my neck. “You smell incredible.”

“Yes, she still hates you.” I melt in his arms, clinging to those broad shoulders. “Stop, Sebastian. We’ll never make it to dinner.”

A dark laugh, and he’s opening the truck’s door for me. “Better get in, then.”

Even when I’m buckled in and watching him slide behind the wheel, I still feel like my heart is beating too fast. We turn onto the road back to Heart’s Cove.

“Where are we going?”

Sebastian glances at me, then turns back to the road. “My place.”

I frown. “What?”

“I haven’t had a good steak since I got here. Didn’t want to risk it with one of the restaurants I haven’t tried. Figured I’d cook.”

“You cook?” I don’t mean to sound so incredulous, but my heart started thumping at the thought of going to Sebastian’s house, where he sleeps. And showers. And gets dressed. And exists. Which sometimes includes being naked.

Is the heat on in this truck, or what?

“I do,” he answers with a grin. The vehicle slows, and he frowns at me. “Is that okay? If you’d rather we go out, we can. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable. I just moved in, and the place isn’t much. I’m… Shit. I didn’t think this through. You got all dressed up and you probably thought we were going somewhere nice.”

“No,” I blurt. “No, Sebastian, I’d love to eat food you made yourself. I just didn’t know you could cook, is all.” His face is still troubled, so I slide my palm over his thigh. “Take me to your place, Sebastian. I haven’t had a good steak in years.”

A little puff of breath escapes his nose, and he jerks his chin down in a rough movement. “All right.”
