He was a strange man. But then, she could only assume that a man who lived out of the woods like this, had no one else in an entire castle with him, and communicated by intercom, could be nothing other than strange.

She began to move around the kitchen while she ate, poking around the fridge, a bread cabinet. And there were many baked goods in it.

It was clear that food was important to him.

There were gourmet cheeses, and an abundance of fruits and vegetables.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She could see that. Because she understood. She herself had lived a cloistered existence, and knew that it was details such as the food you ate that made it all worthwhile.

“And what else do you do with your time?”

“Everything in this house is my invention. The intercom system, the different automated features.”

“Oh. That is... It’s what you do.”

“You have not an inkling who I am, do you?”

“No,” she said. “I don’t. Why would I?”

“I had thought that you might have a guess by now. I’m Cameron McKenzie.”

He waited for her to respond to that. To respond to his name.

She did not. Rather she simply sat there, a considering look on her face as she chewed another bite of his tart.

“I’m sorry, if that’s supposed to mean anything to me, I am hopelessly ignorant. I have never been one to follow the outside news, because I can only follow what my father allows. He does not approve of pop culture or concept.”

“So you know nothing of me?”

“Nothing.”

What a rare creature she was. She would have no concept of who he had been before. No preconceived idea of how he would be or how he should look.

The more he thought about it, the more the plan he was forming began to make sense.

He would never touch her, of course. She was... She made him think of a rare gemstone. Something spectacular.

Singular.

The more he had watched her, the more he had been transfixed.

She was a sensual beauty. And yet he could see that she was innocent.

The way that she had tasted the wine and carefully considered the complexities of the flavor had been fascinating.

The way she spoke of things...

He wished to listen to her speak for hours.

A novelty. But then, he had been alone here all this time. His only real contact in the outside world was Apollo. And that was different.

She didn’t know him. She was a true stranger.

“Tell me, Athena. What do you want to do with your life?”

She tilted her head to the side. “Do you care?”

“I am interested. Whether or not I care remains to be seen.”
