“Because of our love, of course,” said Athena. She looked at him and smiled.

She wondered if he would smile back.

So rarely did he smile. Once, she’d seen him do it once.

He remained stoic.

“Yes,” he said flatly. “Because of our love.”

He was maddening. And amusing, even though she had a feeling he was not being amusing on purpose.

The older man pulled out a small tray, with a selection of four different rings.

He was very good at his job, Athena could see, because she didn’t need the choice of the whole store. No, these four were all perfect in their own way, and she knew she didn’t need to see anything else.

But it was one that was shaped like a pear, glittering and brilliant, with two sapphires on either side, that was the one that truly caught and held her attention.

The sapphires were like his eyes.

“That one,” she said.

“Excellent taste,mademoiselle,” he said.

He gestured toward Cameron. “Put it on her finger.”

Cameron took the ring out of the velvet case.

It looked comically small in his giant hands.

He was such a large man, imposing, and she imagined that it was the beauty of his face that had once softened him. And there was nothing to soften him now. Nothing to make him less formidable than he was.

She appreciated that. Not that she would have ever wished the scarring on him, but there was an extreme quality to him now.

Something that she knew most men didn’t possess.

He was unique. And terrifying. Marvelous.

And when he slipped the ring on her finger, she lost her breath. It was as if the ring sliding onto her finger was a kiss, another vow. An intimate touch even though it was nothing more than gems and precious metal.

It felt real. Even though she knew it wasn’t. Even though she knew nothing could be further from the truth.

It felt real.

She felt like she might be his.

What’s the matter with you? You should want to be your own.

She knew that. She shouldn’t want to go from the ownership of one man to another. She looked up at him, and their eyes met.

It wouldn’t be ownership. The kind of claim that Cameron had staked on her was different.

Except he didn’t want that claim.

“Perfect,” she whispered.

“We’ll take it,” said Cameron.

“Wonderful. Mr. Agassi said that he would settle the account.”
