I shake my head at myself. No. They’ve explained to me that the world they live in, that I apparently live in, is dangerous. It’s not out of bounds to just check on them.

Ro:

Hey, I haven’t seen you guys around today.

Are you okay?

I set my phone down next to my pint glass and look over to where Sam and Desi are playing a game called snooker that looks a little like pool, but I have no idea of the rules.

My phone buzzes, and I’m far too quick to pick it up.

Hardin:

Miss us, love?

Ro:

Hardly. I just noticed you’d given up your stalker tendencies

and got concerned you’d been picked up by the authorities.

My phone buzzes before I can even set it down again, and I frown at the new number that flashes on my screen. Not with a text, but a call.

I frown and hit the answer button. “Hello?”

“Sweeney.”

I sigh, leaning back in my chair. “Harris. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I haven’t even begun to give you pleasure yet, Sweeney. Just wait.” His voice is a low grumble and my mouth falls open at his suggestive tone. The words he’s just uttered to me are more inline with Hardin than Fielder, and I am not really sure what to do with that. Well, my brain isn’t really sure what to do with that, but my vag apparently gushes at his words.

He chuckles on the other end of the line like he knows what he just did to me. “You still with me?”

I sip my drink before answering. “Yep.”

“Good. We’re on our way back to Seven Stars. We have a few things we need to square away before term starts.”

I let out a breath and settle more firmly in my chair. “Okay.”

“Your flight is tomorrow morning?” He phrases it like a question, but I can tell he already knows the answer.

“Yes. Tomorrow morning at nine-thirty.”

He hums. “I had hoped to have someone escort you back, but I don’t think I’ll be able to arrange it in time. Sam is aware of the situation now, so she’s been keeping an eye on you for us.” My brows lower and I flick my eyes to where Sam is bent over Desi, showing her how to line up a shot, which is definitely not needed because Desi spent a good portion of her formative years in an all ages pool hall. Even if the rules of Snooker are different, she definitely knows how to hit the cue ball.

Fielder is still talking. “Once she drops you off at the airport, avoid going anywhere that is unpopulated with people. We don’t know when they’ll strike again, but we know they will.”

I nod. “Makes sense.”

“You’re going to head directly to the Ferry when you land? You aren’t going to see your mother?”

Why does he need to know that? Still, I find myself answering. “Yes, I will go directly from the airport to the ferry.” It should run twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, to accommodate all the students coming back. It’s not like the first ferry trip I took out to the island where all the students went together for the start of term.

He hums in his throat and I can practically hear his brain running, making plans, figuring out the next best steps. “Okay. Okay. Good.”

“Good?”

“Good,” He agrees.
