Finally, I feel him start to relax and I slow down, looking around as I realize where I am.

Shifting back, I find myself at the old cemetery to the south of the property—the place where my father is buried.

As I take a deep breath, I let the cool night air caress my naked skin.

The last time I came here was last year on his birthday. Keisha had come with me, demanding that we set a date as if my father could hear her and give us his blessing.

Finding his grave, I sit on the wet grass.

“I know what you did,” I say in the silence of the night. “You ruined everything. You tried to keep us apart. I don’t care if you approve, Lei belongs to Riley and me and as soon as I return, we’re making it official.”

Chapter Sixteen

LEI

It's quiet in the house with Corbin, Riley, and the rest of the pack gone.

Lying in bed, I wonder if I’d done the right thing in telling them the truth. With Jacob gone, I thought it would have been easier, but it looks like his ghost still lingers around our relationship.

As I hear the front door open downstairs, I wonder which one is back first.

Throwing off the covers, I quickly slip on a pair of shorts and a tank top before creeping down the stairs toward Corbin's office.

“Corbin … Riley?” I call out but the house remains silent. Rubbing my arms against the chill in the night air I continue toward the office. Gripping the handle, I turn just as I feel a sharp prick in the side of my neck.

“Miss me, baby.”

Throwing back my elbow, I stagger against the door as I turn around to face my attacker. Cold eyes stare back at me but it’s his smile that makes my blood run cold.

It’s the smile of a predator.

A killer.

There was only one man stupid enough to break into Redwood Manor. Xan.

I can feel my limbs growing tired as I pull myself along the wall trying to get away. Whatever he had given me was taking effect fast and I know I only have minutes before the darkness would take me.

“Corbin … Riley.” I try once more but my voice is barely more than a whisper.

Falling to the floor, my eyes begin to close as I hear the sound of Xan’s boots striding toward me.

“Hurry up and put her in the trunk.” A woman calls out. “They will be back soon.”

*.*.*.*.*

Pain lances through my body as I try to move but there’s nowhere to go. Opening my eyes, I’m greeted by nothing but darkness and the rumble of an engine speeding up beneath me.

Shit. How long had I been out?

Where were Corbin and Riley?

Closing my eyes, I try to remember what had happened. I remember telling Corbin and Riley the truth and they had both left. I had gone looking for them, and then … Xan, and a woman.

Panic consumes me as I fight to catch my breath.

I can feel the car beneath me begin to slow down before coming to a stop. A door opens and the woman speaks again only this time I recognize that voice.Keisha.

“Take her inside and finish the job. I’m going to head back and tell Corbin and Riley she left. It’s not the first time she’s done it.”
