Hannah pressed a hand to Caroline’s chest. “Excuse me? Hot lawyer!”

“Oh, come on. Anyone with a pulse probably thinks she’s hot. The issue I have with that is that she knows it. It’s not my idea of the perfect woman.”

“It’s not mine either.”

Caroline pressed her body to Hannah’s. “Whatisyour idea of the perfect woman?”

“You. Always.” Hannah held Caroline close, kissing her way along her jawline. When she reached Caroline’s ear, she whispered, “Would you like to get naked, gorgeous? This room is going to waste if we don’t make full use of it.”

“Mm. I thought you’d never ask.”

Chapter20

Okay,this was the life.

Hannah stood at Caroline’s kitchen sink, rinsing their dinner plates while Caroline sat on the counter. Life had been fairly straightforward lately; Caroline was definitely coming out of her shell more. That much was clear when she landed in the kitchen before dinner wearing Hannah’s clothes. But she loved that. It meant Caroline felt comfortable. They had a long way to go in terms of meeting one another’s friends and family, but Hannah was happy to take it all in Caroline’s stride. Rushing things may only set their relationship back, and Hannah wasn’t prepared to risk that.

Caroline meant far too much to her.

But Hannah did want to mention Edie. Her daughter was becoming more and more suspicious of her mum’s newfound happiness, and there were only so many times Hannah could blame it on the joy work brought her. Nobody wasthatenthusiastic.

“You have something on your mind,” Caroline spoke suddenly.

“Well…” Hannah paused, slotting the final plate into the dishwasher and turning the tap off. “When you’re sitting there in my clothes,a lotruns through my mind.”

“I’m wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt. Hardly anything special.”

“Special to me.” Hannah dried her hands on a tea towel as she came to stand between Caroline’s legs. “Andsobeautiful.” She drew Caroline into a kiss, smiling when Caroline deepened it immediately. Few things in life pleased her as much as Caroline’s lips did. She’d quickly figured that out.

Caroline moaned, grinning against Hannah’s mouth before pulling back. She brushed Hannah’s hair from her face, studying her.

“I had something I wanted to talk to you about,” Hannah said, palming Caroline’s thighs slowly.

Concern flashed in Caroline’s eyes as she reached for her glass of water and sipped. “Oh. Is everything okay?”

Hannah cocked her head, smiling. There was something incredibly beautiful about Caroline showing her vulnerability.

“Is it the clothes? Or was it dinner?” Caroline shot from the counter.

“It wasn’t the clothes or dinner,” Hannah said softly, catching Caroline by the wrist.

Caroline frowned. “Then what is it? What did I do?”

“You didn’t do anything.” Hannah took Caroline’s hand, their bodies pressed together. “Hey, relax.”

Caroline’s cheeks flushed, her eyes cast between them. It didn’t happen often, but Caroline did appear wary at times. As though she didn’t want to rock the boat in any way at all.

“Look at me.” Hannah lifted Caroline’s chin with two fingers, hoping her own eyes reassured Caroline. She hated the thought of her girlfriend imagining Naomi when they were together. Hannah knew she could be wrong, but Caroline’s body language told her everything she needed to know. Shehadbeen imagining Naomi then. “You’re perfect, okay? Dinner was amazing.You’reamazing.”

Caroline scoffed. “I’m pathetic.”

“Hey! Don’t talk about my girlfriend like that.”

A gentle smile settled on Caroline’s mouth, her shoulders relaxing. “I had a moment. Sorry.”

“I just wanted to talk to you about us. Nothing to worry about.” Hannah added quickly. “But maybe we should do it another time.”

“No. Let’s do it now. Whatever it is, I want to get it out of the way.”
