“Don’t worry, Pops. Take Mother everywhere you can. I’ll make you proud.”

And I would.

But not just for him, for the family I’d always wanted.

A beautiful bride and two glorious pups.

CHAPTER18

Gabriel

Until death do us part.

The words had more of a special meaning now that I knew my mother was on borrowed time. Maybe the males in the Giordano family were all fools. We wasted so much time pontificating and hungering for power that we lost sight of what was most important and the people who were right in front of our eyes.

Almost everything was troubling, but not nearly as much as the thought of losing time with my mother, my sisters, and especially the woman I loved.

As I walked inside the house, the scent of something else delicious made my mouth water. When I heard the scampering of the dogs, I shook my head. I didn’t deserve happiness, but I would do everything I could to make certain I kept my promises to Sarah.

“Hi there, pups. It’s good to be home.” I said, laughing as they jumped all over me, barking and woofing. I protected the flowers, wondering if buying her roses had been the right thing to do. Chuckling, I moved toward the kitchen, remaining in the doorway and watching her. The scene was similar, her in bare feet dancing to a song as she prepared whatever awesome dinner I knew we’d have.

When she stiffened and finally turned around, I could see relief in her eyes.

“Did I scare you?” I asked as I walked inside the room.

“That’s hard given I have two big dogs to protect me. They announced your arrival.” She dragged her tongue across her lips, allowing her gaze to fall to the roses. “What’s the occasion?”

“Oh, I just thought I’d provide the most insanely gorgeous woman a token of my appreciation.” As I handed them to her, our fingers touched, and the same bolt of electricity rushed into my system.

She took a deep breath as she inhaled the aroma, closing her eyes. I loved the way her eyelashes dashed across her skin.

“They’re lovely. Is everything okay?”

“It is. I’m going to grab a bottle of champagne.”

“We’re celebrating?”

“We are,” I said as I winked. “It would appear Theodora is getting married.”

She grinned, a warm blush creeping across her skin. “You agreed.”

“They’re in love. Who am I to keep romance from happening?”

“As if you’d know.”

Her teasing voice pushed my cock to full attention. “I’ll be right back.” As I moved into the wine cellar, selecting a bottle, I pulled the ring from my pocket, placing it on the tasting table. I opened the bottle, selecting two flutes and dropping the ring inside one of them before pouring the bubbly.

As I returned to the kitchen, I was surprised she’d found a vase, already arranging the flowers. It was hard not to watch her, studying her every move. She had delicate but strong fingers, which helped make her such a good surgeon.

I put the bottle on the counter, slowly bringing the glasses toward her. As I handed her one, I took a deep breath. “I won’t make any promises I can’t keep, but I will never lie to you. Do you believe me?”

“Actually, I do.”

“Can you trust me?”

She narrowed her eyes. “With everything I have.”

“Good.”
