A wry smile formed on her face. “Let me guess. You plan on marrying her. I know who she is, the mayor’s daughter, a man who called you out on national television just this morning.”

“What are you talking about?” What the fuck had the mayor done?

“You threatened him? Well, he named you as public enemy number one with a pictorial.”

I sucked in my breath. There was more than a remote chance that Sarah had seen the news report. There was a hell of a lot to do in a short period of time. “I want both of you to listen to me. You are not going anywhere without one of my men accompanying with you. Do you understand me?”

“You’re not our father, Gabriel, barely our brother,” Theodora shot back.

The cut was the kind she was so good at, her sharp tongue something I admired. She refused to play the princess role, which was in her genes. However, she also had no real sense of danger since she’d been protected from the family drama for most of her life.

“No, but I am head of this family now. You will do as I say.”

Maria laughed. “I should never have stayed.”

“Maybe not, but as long as you’re in this country, you will follow the rules.” I glanced from one to the other. “My rules.”

“The Morettis will retaliate,” Theodora said.

“And I’ll be ready.” My phone rang, the interruption bad timing. As I yanked it into my hand, I sensed Dillon wasn’t calling to tell me Sarah was ready and eager to face her destiny. “What is it?”

“The doctor disappeared from the hospital. I checked her apartment. She’s not there.”

The man had failed me again. That wouldn’t happen a third time. “If you’ve lost her and anything happens, you will pay the price.”

“Yes, sir. I’m sorry I failed you.”

“Keep hunting. Sarah must be found.” As soon as I ended the call, I headed for the door. “I will lock you both in your rooms if you disobey my orders.”

“Like father. Like son,” Theodora snarked. “You’re think you’re a king now. Don’t you?”

A king. That’s what members of the Brotherhood called themselves. Maybe that’s how I needed to start acting.

“I will do what it takes to keep you safe.” I glanced from one to the other, trying to control my breathing.

“Tell that to the woman whose life you’re about to destroy, brother.”

Even though I opened the door, determined to find Sarah, I took a few seconds to mull over my sisters’ words. The weight of my decisions was bearing down, but now wasn’t the time to second guess. A war would soon begin.

Then I’d paint the streets in Moretti blood.

CHAPTER10

Sarah

“Carrie. Listen to me. Can I bring the dogs to your house?” I was gasping for air, my voice unrecognizable.

“What’s wrong?” she demanded.

“I can’t talk right now. Just tell me if I can.”

“Look, I have to do—”

“Listen to me!” I snapped, my nerves frazzled.

“Jesus. What the fuck is going on?”

“I’m being stalked.”
