“Okay, babies. We’re going on a little adventure. Okay?”

Woof! Woof!

At least they had no idea what was going on, although Shadow gave me a strange look, as if he knew I was crawling with fear.

“I’m going to grab a few things and some toys.” I almost choked on the words, a fog forming in my mind. I dropped my purse then headed for the bedroom, Goldie following. I nearly yanked the shelf off the wall from the force I used grabbing a duffle bag.

Then I stuffed a few items inside before heading to their toybox, snatching a few items that would keep them occupied. I’d buy another bag of dog food later. Perfect. I had everything I needed.

I tossed the bag onto the bed then grabbed a pair of jeans and a sweater, struggling to get into them. Ice ran through my veins, and I did what I could to yank anger from the depths of my being. If I was enraged, I could work faster. Goldie remained by my side and the second I rubbed behind her ear, a horrible sensation jetted through me.

Shadow was never far behind. Never. Especially when I came home. They were constant companions, refusing to leave my side for at least thirty minutes.

Swallowing, I continued to pet Goldie, blinking tears away. “Shadow? Come here, boy.”

I heard nothing. No whining. No barking.

“Shadow!”

Oh, God. What was going on? Even my damn phone was in the other room. “Stay here, girl.” As soon as I petted Goldie one more time, she took off into the living room, barking three times then stopping.

Now the fear was uncontrollable, my heart racing. I glanced around the room, finally yanking a lamp from the bedside table. As I held it in both hands, I crept slowly toward the door, darting my head around the corner.

“Babies? Come to Mommy.”

When I heard a tiny whimper, my mind was too fucked up to know from where. The kitchen? My small study on the other side of the living room? I took several shallow breaths and headed further into the main room, my eyes sweeping from one side to the other. Then I crept closer to the kitchen. There was no one inside. That left one location.

Jesus Christ. The front door was between me and the study. I could bolt out, trying to get help.

Then what would the motherfucker do with my babies? No. I would protect them with my life. I firmed up my grip on the base of the lamp then took long strides toward the room. When I stood a couple of feet outside, I didn’t see a thing.

I’d been told I had the courage of a saint. It was time to put that to the test.

I walked inside, prepared for what I’d find.

My eyes were drawn to my furry babies lying comfortably by the small sofa, both with brand new bones in their mouths.

And the intruder sitting in the center with a drink in his one hand, a weapon in the other was the man I’d believed I had an incredible connection with, hoping our budding relationship would turn into more.

He was as gorgeous as ever, the light stubble covering his strong jaw making him appear even more dangerous, the flash of his eyes indicating lust as well as slight amusement. The same electricity crackled in the air, stifling my breath. He appeared comfortable in my home, stroking Shadow’s head as he stared at me, his legs crossed, his jacket unbuttoned.

All I wanted to do was wrap my hands around his throat, strangling the life out of him.

But I knew I’d never get the chance.

“Hello, Sarah. I think it’s time that you and I got to know each other even better.”

“Who the fuck are you?” I shifted from one foot to the other, my muscles tense but I wouldn’t hesitate to use the lamp, smashing it against his head. I only hoped it would crack his skull open.

He lowered his gaze to my hands, his smile widening. And he continued to stroke Shadow, who couldn’t be happier.

“And what did you do to my dogs?” The anger was finally surfacing, spewing from my mouth.

“I did nothing. I find that with all things precious, you only need to use dark commands while providing reinforcement. Wouldn’t you say that to be true, my beautiful submissive?”

“Fuck you. You stalked me. You used me.”

“Yes, and I will do it again.”
