Mak answered the door and let her in. Without saying a word he took her to the bedroom. There was no one else in the room, but he closed the door behind her anyways.

“You were arrested?” he asked as soon as the door closed.

She told him the whole story, including the reason why she was arrested.

“You need to get away from Altair,” Mak said. “He’s dangerous.”

“It’s not like there’s anything I can do.”

“I know. It’s not your fault.”

“Isn’t that why we’re fighting this fight?” she asked. “So women can get away from unwanted husbands?”

“Yes,” he answered, he stepped closer to her. “I just hate thinking of you alone with him, never knowing when he might try to harm you.”

She’d long stopped worrying that Altair might harm her, but she didn’t correct him. She didn’t think Mak would appreciate her defending Altair. And as Mak inched even closer, placing his hand on her waist, she suddenly wanted him to stay pleased. She wanted to do just what she’d decided before, have sex with a guy that would expect nothing more from her.

He pulled her into him, lowering his head to kiss her on the lips. He kissed her slowly, expertly rolling his tongue around hers, then slowly drawing away, with a gentle kiss on her lips.

“Sorry,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about. If I didn’t want this, you would know.”

He laughed. “Well then, sorry that we got interrupted last time. Brent isn’t as understanding.”

As he said his brother’s name, his face lost its humor.

“I saw him,” she said. “In the prison. He pretended we didn’t know each other.”

“Did he say anything?”

She tried to remember their exact conversation.

“No,” she said. “Not really. But he did make me feel better. He let me know I was safe.”

“That’s Brent, being a hero even when he’s being dragged to the torture chamber.”

She heard a hint of resentment in his voice.

“Is he going to be alright?” she asked.

Mak shook his head. “I doubt it. Even if they can’t prove he’s a rebel, Brent never got along with the Baedden council. He’s constantly causing trouble for them. They’ll give the Mudden military a reason to hang him, even if they don’t find one themselves.”

Her heart pounded in her chest. This was the second time someone mentioned hanging, and she was starting to wonder if maybe it wasn’t a figure of speech.

“That’s terrible,” she said. “I’m so sorry.”

Mak looked at her with unmasked pain. He shook his head.

“I don’t want to think about it,” he said.

He reached for her again, pulling her body up against his.

“In fact, I’d love to not think about anything for a little while.”

Nova would very much like that too.

She rose up on her toes to kiss him again, and he kissed her back.
