“The file says Meghan has never been with a man,” he said with a perfectly straight face.

Nova raised her eyebrow at that.

“Yeah, I saw that too. It makes you wonder who writes those things, and what kind of questions they ask these poor women.”

He didn’t laugh or acknowledge her comment in any way.

“Alright,” she said. “I’ll play along. How do you know that I have not ‘never been with a man?’”

“You are too self-assured, too brazen in your seduction to be new at it.”

“Seduction?”

She almost laughed. She shouldn’t be enjoying herself right now. She should be scared for her life, yet part of her felt so relieved to finally be talking to him about these things. Would she still find it funny when he had her hung for being a traitor?

“Your massages, your touches, even your requests in the bedroom were all too well rehearsed.”

Her cheeks warmed up as she remembered those things.

“Who are you?” he asked again.

“I told you, my name is Nova.”

“Why are you pretending to be my wife, Nova?”

He said her name like it tasted bad.

“I’m not answering that. What’s your plan, Altair? You obviously were waiting to confront me. What’s your next step?”

“I want an explanation.”

“And if I don’t give you one? Are you going to interrogate me? Beat me up?”

The look of surprise on his face told her he hadn’t anticipated that she wouldn’t give him the answers he sought.

“No.” Some of the anger left his face as he admitted this.

“Well, in that case, I have nothing more to say.”

Nova handed him back the file. He looked down at the picture of Meghan.

“She’s still out there,” Nova said. “I’m sure that when you tell your family that I’m a fraud, they’ll get you the real Meghan to replace me. Your match.”

“My match?” Altair continued looking at the picture with uncertainty. He’d get used to the idea eventually.

Nova shouldn’t be encouraging him to go out and kidnap another woman, but in that moment, she really hated Meghan. She didn’t want to think about why that was.

“What are you going to do with me?”

He looked up at her.

“Was any of it real?” His voice was full of emotion.

“What do you mean?”

“Was anything that you told me the truth? Or were you pretending to be someone else the whole time?”

“As you pointed out, I didn’t make much effort pretending to be Meghan. Most of it was the real me, just maybe toned down a little so you wouldn’t hate me.”
