“What?”

“You were the only one with the key to his cell. Were you the one who beat him up when he was defenseless?”

“How do you know about the key?” His eyes grew. “That’s why you seduced me? To get my key?”

“Yes. Now answer my question.”

He seemed to hesitate.

“Are you asking because you cared about him?”

She looked into his eyes.

“I’m asking because I care aboutyou.”

He swallowed audibly.

“Gary beat him up. That’s why I used my key to lock him up, so Brent wouldn’t end up like Neil.”

Nova released her breath, feeling like she’d let go of a ton of bricks.

“Let’s go?” Altair asked.

“Yes.”

Altair continued down the hallway in the direction of the voices.

“Three Minutes,” Mak yelled.

Three men stood a few meters apart, each holding a lit oil lamp in their hands.

Above their heads was the dynamite they’d attached to the ceiling. Nova had no idea how much of the stuff was needed to break the ceiling, but it looked like an excessive amount to her.

“Don’t move,” Altair yelled, holding his weapon and pointing it at the closest man.

Nova jumped out from behind him and pointed her laser pistol at Mak who stood in the middle.

All three men turned to face them and froze.

“Altair?” Mak said.

Then he looked at Nova.

“I knew you were a traitor,” he said.

“What are you doing Mak?” she asked. “You’re going to kill innocent people.”

“Innocent? They killed my brother.”

“What about your friends? The ones that were caught? They’re up there now being judged.”

“They would want to die for the cause.”

He looked back at her with anger and hate.

“All three of you step away from the dynamite,” Altair said, cutting into their conversation. “Now!”

“Don’t move,” Mak said. “If we have to, we can all die here.”
