“What?” I asked him, eyeing the bag over his shoulder. It was at least twice as big as the one from the day before, and for the life of me, I couldn’t guess what he could’ve possibly put in there. No way in hell did I need that many clothes, and clothes were pretty much all I was missing.

“You look calm,” he told me.

I blinked at him.

His lips curved upward just the tiniest bit.

I noticed circles under his eyes.

“I thought you said you’d have to go to multiple places to get everything else you thought I’d need,” I told him.

“I did.” He easily lifted the bag off his shoulder and pretty much tossed it into the room behind me.

“So you lied?” I checked.

His eyes narrowed. “Why do you keep assuming I’d lie to you?”

“I assume everyone will lie to me,” I shot back. “And you definitely didn’t answer my question.”

His eyes narrowed further. “I said I’d need to go to multiple places. During the night, I flew to those places, collecting your things. Now, I’m here.” He gestured to the huge bag. “And so are your things.”

I blinked. “You didn’t sleep?”

“I can sleep while I’m waiting out here to convince you to consider me as your mate.” He gestured to a place along the stronghold’s invisible wall. I noticed what looked like a tent built up against it.

Damn.

Ana must’ve really made the fae men camp out for a month before letting anyone talk to them.

Not gonna lie, I respected her for that. It would’ve been nice to have someone protect me like that, at any point in my life.

“Unless you don’t plan on making me wait,” Calian said, studying me.

“I don’t plan anything. Personal rule. Plans lead to heartache.” I grabbed the door. “Thanks for the stuff, but I’ve gotta go.” I swung it shut, and to my surprise and relief, he didn’t try to stop me.

With the door closed between us, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

I didn’t feel as relieved as I would’ve hoped, though.

I actually kind of missed the big, smirky dude.

Which had to be the fault of whatever ridiculous magic was thundering through my veins now that I’d come to Vevol, because I refused to miss anyone. That was the kind of shit that led to depression, and anxiety, and other mental crap that I most definitely couldn’t afford to have. That kind of thing killed women who’d been through the hell I’d survived.

So I grabbed my new bag and dragged the massive thing over to my door. Mare was the only one awake, so I thought it was probably at least sort of early, though I hadn’t seen a clock. The sun was up when I answered the door, though, so maybe most people just preferred to sleep in at the Stronghold. I definitely wasn’t against that idea, though I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get my mind on the same page. Good sleep was a luxury I hadn’t had in a long time.

With the door to my room locked, I felt safe as I started unpacking my bag. That was a huge thing for me, feeling safe, but I didn’t want to acknowledge it because acknowledgment always led to shittery.

The first thing in the bag was a set of clothes, which I expected.

What I didn’t expect was the style of them.

The other girls had clothing that was either from Earth or styled after what we had on Earth. They even had their own styles. Mare had oversized sweatshirts and leggings, North had tight black clothes that covered almost every inch of her, Sunny had old band t-shirts…

Earth clothes.

The things in my bag were definitely not from Earth.

There were multiple pairs of short, thick shorts that reminded me of the shit the preppy volleyball chicks at my high school used to wear, and tank tops made of the same material. The damn thing would leave at least an inch or two of my abdomen on display, and I wasn’t even tall. Only five fucking five.
