“The unseelie don’t have packs, or families, or organization at all. The Wild Hunt keeps everyone safe… and Lian runs it, even if the others won’t admit it. One of his buddies told me that,” Sunny said, her gaze glued to the fight. “The running joke is that he’s the Savage King. The unseelie king, who is actually a king, they call the Tamed King. He’s a really boring guy but apparently already mated to a previously-human chick.”

“Fuck.”

I continued staring out the window.

The more I saw, the more I understood the word used to describe him.

Savage.

I had seen more fights than most people could imagine, but I’d never seen anyone move like that. So easily, like fighting came as naturally to him as breathing.

The fae guys went down, one, by one, by one.

All of us watched, both in awe and horror.

“These guys believe in soulmates,” Mare whispered to me

“Not the same way we do, though. They think you have multiple possible soulmates, but the bond doesn’t grow until you’ve picked one. Your magic will grow wilder and more uncontrollable until you’re bonded, though, after you’ve met a potential mate. If word spreads that the king started bonding to you…” She trailed off. “Usually, they have five years to meet us for themselves, so they can decide whether or not they want us.”

“How long until the magic gets too wild?” I checked.

“A couple of weeks, I think. Maybe a couple of months. We’ve never seen it, so all we know is what the other seelie guys told us.” Sunny shrugged. “And none of them wanted us.”

“Not for lack of trying,” Mare muttered.

I felt bad, but didn’t know what else to say.

The fighting finally ended as the last fae crashed to the ground, leaving Calian standing on his own. He wiped a bit of blood from beneath his nose—it looked like it had been broken—and smeared it on the blood-spattered tank top he had on.

Then he stepped back and leaned up against the window.

The whole stronghold was invisible, somehow, so he probably didn’t know it was a window.

I stared at his biceps, though.

So.

Fucking.

Huge.

The other fae began to get up. I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but they looked angry.

Some of them clenched their fists.

“They’re going to start fighting again,” Sunny said, surprise flooding her voice.

“I’m not sure whether to sit down and enjoy the show with some kind of sick satisfaction or try to intervene,” Mare admitted.

Sunny stepped around the couch closest to us and dropped onto the cushions. “What do you think they’re fighting over?”

“The guys probably want to meet January, to see if she’s their potential mate too. If I had to guess, I’d say Lian’s answer is no, and they don’t like it.”

My face paled.

Fuck, what if that reallywaswhat they were fighting over?

The fighting had made Dots uncomfortable in her own home, and I knew how shitty that was.
