It occurred to me as I stepped closer to the hole in the tree, that the seelie fae might be able to see in the dark. I knew nothing about them except that they looked massive and were hunting me in hopes ofmatingwith me, so there was every possibility that they had some kind of supernatural abilities.

Hell, they had said that I was one of them. If they were right, maybe I would have magic of some kind too. I hadn’t noticed anything while I was running, but that didn’t mean the magic didn’t exist. Theyhadcalled me a phoenix.

I sure as fuck wouldn’t complain if I found myself getting taller and stronger, like those bastards, though. Being able to defend myself? Hell yeah.

Looking around the random bit of forest I’d stopped in, I debated my options.

Stay there, and hope they couldn’t find me…

Or keep moving.

Running would be more dangerous in the dark, but it was better than being a sitting duck. So, running it was.

I tossed my obsidian rock back into the dirt and took off into the forest.

Fuck waiting for one of those big bastards to show up and make me his fucking wife.

My blistered feet resumed pounding the ground again, and again, and again.

I’d run for as long as I had to if it meant staying alive—and fucking single.

As the sun went down, the forest seemed to come alive around me. I started hearing strange noises, from animals I undoubtedly didn’t have names for.

Birds flew overhead, many of them much, much bigger than anything I’d seen back on Earth. I was thankful for the weird, vibrant trees hiding me from those bastards.

After a bit of time passed, a blast of wind hit me hard.

My head jerked back and forth as I looked around for whatever had caused it.

When I tilted my head back and peered up into the trees, my breath caught in my throat. I stumbled, then stopped altogether.

My hair whipped around my face as I gawked up at the sky.

Because above me, not all that far away, there was a fuckingdragon.

It was massive, its scales a glittering dark gray color that reminded me of some of the expensive cars that would fly past my Honda Civic and its faded silver paint on the freeway back at home.

I watched it soar overhead, and when it had gone far enough that I couldn’t see it through the blue leaves above me, I relaxed slightly.

And tried to run faster.

It was getting darker, but my eyes seemed to be adjusting to the darkness, so I barely noticed the change in light. The colors were growing less neon and vibrant to my eyes, and I wondered if that had something to do with the way I had apparentlychanged.

I was too tired to think any more about it, though.

So, I kept running.

And didn’t look back.

Only a few minutesafter the dragon flew overhead, everything in the forest seemed to quiet down.

I eyed the trees suspiciously, as if those weird bastards could tell me what all the silence was about.

They couldn’t, though.

At least, not that I knew of.

I kept running, avoiding the trees a bit more now that I’d realized there was a chance the damn things might be able to talk or even just think.
