Wanting to tell Calian about my new tattoos was fine. It was just because we were friends.

Yep, I was going with that.

As I stepped outside my room, I forced myself to slow down, since we were just friends and all.

None of the other girls were up yet, but I was confident that Lian would be awake and outside. As far as I could tell, he hadn’t gone back to his cave to change once since I told him I needed space.

I opened the last few locks on the doors—we’d been leaving most of them undone to save time—and tugged it open before slipping outside. The air was slightly chilly in the mornings, but it felt good against my always-warm skin now that I was a phoenix.

Calian was in his massive dragon form, his body stretched out in front of the door, preventing anyone from leaving or entering.

So much for needing the locks.

The dragon turned and lifted his head, looking slightly surprised that I was outside that early. Because I had been avoiding serious conversations, I’d been forced to avoid flying and spending any time alone with the man as well, so I’d sort of been hiding out in the Stronghold.

“Look,” I whispered, excitement probably showing through my voice even though I was trying not to act like a damned puppy.

His body shifted as his gaze dragged over my skin. “The magic has finally set in completely.” His voice was a rough murmur, and I was fairly certain I’d pulled him out of sleep. “It suits you beautifully.”

My face flushed.

Yeah, that was what I’d been hoping he’d say. I wasn’t about to admit that out loud, but it was the truth.

“Thanks.”

"You’ll have nature magic within you now, too. When you’re ready to learn how to use it, let me know.”

Nature magic?

Was that the power I could feel coming off of the fae so often? Was it how the Wild Hunt guys had managed to fix my roof so quickly and so perfectly, or why Calian lived in a cave?

There were so many questions I wanted to ask, but asking them would mean accepting the bond between us in a way that I wasn’t sure I could handle.

So I didn’t ask.

Instead, I bit down on my lip.

This was…

Not what I’d hoped.

His comments were everything, but when I’d come out of the room, I’d just…

I don’t know.

Wanted more, I guess.

Maybe I didn’t want as much space as I thought I did.

A bird cawed loudly overhead, and my chin lifted as I tried to peer up into the sky, through the thick tree branches above our heads.

“It’s Ervo,” Lian told me, stepping closer but not putting his hands on my skin.

I suddenly missed them violently, those days when he’d touched me every chance he got.

“What does he want?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”
