Other than figuring out how the fuck I was supposed to murder all these sons of bitches, there was a brighter side to look forward to. I’d only dance at the club on the weekends, meaning I’d have a solid five days in a row where I wouldn’t have to see Damien Reyez’s face. I’d be back in school again, though it wasn’t like I’d get to finish out the year and graduate. Damien would remove any and all traces of my existence from the academy just as soon as he got the phone call saying the job was done.

That was okay though. I’d given up on wanting to graduate and going to college ever since that day I woke up in that hospital to learn that my life was now in the dirty, corrupt hands of Damien Reyez.

I sealed those thoughts away as I shut and locked up my last suitcase and hauled it into my living room where I found Jace and Finn, another one of Damien’s followers, waiting for me.

“Got everything?” Jace asked, frowning as his eyes scoped over the fifteen something bags containing all my belongings spread around his and Finn’s feet.

I sighed, reaching up to wipe my sweat off my forehead. “Yeah, this is everything. Can we go now? I’m ready to get the fuck out of here.”

“Finn,” Jace said, nodding to him then to the mountain of luggage. “Go ahead and start taking these out to the car. We’ll be right behind you.”

Finn’s brows furrowed in annoyance as he eyed the bags for a long moment before snatching up two in one hand and one bag in the other, his brown hair flipping slightly to the side as he rushed to turn and leave.

“Kitten.” Jace approached me and cupped my face, crashing his mouth against mine. I started to kiss him back, then quickly my eyes shot open in panic. I hurriedly pushed him back.

Jace winced. “Fuck, I’m sorry. Stupid move.”

Finn was right outside. Nobody knew about our sexual relationship, nobody except for Ginger. If Finn walked in and caught us kissing, I’d literally be kissing Jace and the academy goodbye because we’d both be dead.

I quickly cleared my throat. “Come on, help me get this out to the car.” Finn walked in the door as I reached down to claim a suitcase in both hands. “I don’t want to be late.”

Ignoring the sharp pang stabbing at my heart, I eased past him and Finn and walked out the door and deposited my stuff into Jace’s open hatchback, steeling myself from all these complicated emotions trying to fester out of me and cloud my judgment.

Let it go, Samara. It’s better this way. He’s better off and so are you.

“Hey…” his voice spooked me and as I spun around to face him, my breath caught from how close his face was to mine. “I’m gonna miss you, my beautiful, feral, intoxicating Kitten,” he whispered softly to me, his lips barely touching mine. He snuck a quick taste of my bottom lip, making me groan and squeeze my thighs together as he gently nipped the skin and pulled back.

“Jace,” I growled as I peered over his shoulder, sighing in relief to find Finn nowhere in sight. “Stop.”

“Run with me away.” He was so nervous the words came out scrambled, but I understood the meaning all the same.

“What?” I blinked up at him with wide eyes.

“Run away with me,” he coherently corrected himself. “Right now, you and me. Let’s just get in the car and go. We can—”

“Are you insane?”

“Yes, I am insane. Insanely in love…with you, Samara. Tell me you feel the same and we can figure out the rest together.”

“Jace.” I sighed and shook my head.

“Why can’t you just admit it?” he snapped at me, his throat bobbing, shoulders coiling up with tension. “Youloveme, Samara. I can see it in your eyes. The way you look at me when we’re together. The way you cry my name when I’m pounding into you from behind. I know we agreed to no attachments but I can’t fucking help it. Kitten, you’remine.I want to beyours. Let me take you away from my father. Let me keep you safe.”

“This is the last of it,” Finn hollered as he walked out the door, his arms straining not to collapse from the extra weight of the luggage as he took slow, steady steps towards us.

“I’m sorry, Jace. I-I can’t… I can’t do this right now.”

He huffed out an enraged breath when I turned away from him to help assist Finn load the last of my personal property in the trunk. I didn’t look at Jace again. I hopped right inside the vehicle and stared quietly out the tinted window.

I couldn’t give him what he wanted and he needed to accept it. We were already playing with fire and it was time to extinguish the seductive flame between us and move on.

I had more important things on my mind I had to focus on. The Ravagers, Xavier Michaelson, and getting the justice I deserved.

Nothing would come between that. Not even Jace.

Damien called Finn just before we hit the road, instructing us to return to the club. He wanted to speak with me before he no longer had me under his radar and full control.

To lay down someground rules,as he had put it.
