“Almost noon. Good thing we don’t have classes today or else you definitely would’ve been thrown in the dungeon for being hungover.”

I sat up despite the pounding in my head and wrapped my arms around my roommate. “Thank you for helping me. I’m so sorry for all of this.”

“Don’t apologize,” Brian said, his smile heard in his tone. “That’s what we’re here for.”

“But, um, Samara…” Sky released me, her voice low. “I-uh, helped you change out of your clothes last night.”

I bristled, and suddenly that headache I’d just complained about abruptly vanished. I looked down at my clothes…only they weren’t mine. I was wearing a pair of Sky’s sleep shorts and one of her tank tops. And as I looked over to my nightstand, I gulped. The blades and garter belts were right there on top of it.

Panic seared through my veins as I gaped wide-eyed between Sky and her boyfriend. This wasn’t happening. Please tell me this wasn’t happening right now.

“I can explain…”

“Listen to me, Samara.” Sky reached over and grabbed my hands, squeezing them gently. “You probably don’t remember, but I want you to know that it’s okay. I’m here for you, we both are, if you ever want to talk about what happened to you that night.”

“What?” My brows knitted together. “What are you talking about?”

Her eyes slid down my thigh and down my leg, eyeing the huge scar on the back of my calf. Immediately I crossed my legs and looked away from them, my throat tight. I could hardly contain the tears filling my eyes.

“I…” I swallowed, my voice cracking. “I told you about that?”

“You did,” Brian answered as he sat on the end of the bed. “Well, it was more like you cried to us about it after Sky found the knives.”

“What all did I say?” A tear slipped out my eye. I quickly wiped it away, still unable to look at either of them.

“You told us you came home from work one night and that your mother was doing drugs with some guy. You said she stole all your money to pay back some gang leader she owed money to and when you went to confront her about it, the guy was dead, and your mom was held at gunpoint by a man in a mask. You were shot…”

Tears rushed down my face as that night came rushing back to me in flashes. “What else did I tell you?”

“That was it, really. But you did also say that what happened to you is the reason why you carry those blades. You said they were for protection. To help you feel safe.”

I nodded, taking all of it in. I couldn’t believe it. I hadn’t talked about that night with anyone. Not even Jace or Ginger. But what stunned me the most is that I had no memory of telling them any of it. At least there was a plus side to it. Drunk me covered my ass by hiding the real truth about everything. I was furious with myself, but at the same time I was beyond relieved to know I’d saved myself from exposure.

One thing was for certain though. I was never drinking again.

“Are you gonna rat me out?” I asked, finally gaining the courage to look at them. “About the weapons, I mean.”

“No.” Sky offered me a sincere smile. “Your secret is safe with us. I promise.”

“Thank you.” I wiped away another tear before pulling her in close. Brian offered me a smile when I nodded my appreciation to him.

“You think you’re up for eating something?” he asked when Sky and I parted. “The dining hall should have lunch ready by now.”

“You mean they serve us lunch on the weekends too? I thought it was only during the weekdays.”

“Some of the students here don’t take advantage of their weekend pass. So yeah, the school provides extra meals for those who choose to stay here full time.”

“And you didn’t tell me this, why?” I asked, glaring at Sky.

“You told me you wouldn’t be here on the weekends, so I never thought to bring it up.”

“Right,” I nodded. She had me there, so I couldn’t really hold that against her.

Brian had then cleared his throat and got to his feet. “Well, I’m hungry, so I’m gonna go ahead and go.” He rounded the bed over to Sky, pressing a sweet kiss to her mouth. “See you there?”

“Yeah babe.” She smiled at him. “Give us a few minutes. We’ll be down soon.”

A few minutes turned into more like thirty. I had to brush my teeth, change my clothes, and I decided to spend an extra ten to fifteen minutes showering off just so I could completely rid myself from the stench of alcohol. Sky let me borrow her hairdryer and when I was done with my hair, we walked out our dorm and finally made the trek down to the dining hall.
