“How do you know about that?” I asked through a painful yawn.

“Who doesn’t know?” was his outrageous reply. “Everyone knows, Samara. You fell in the pool and then Kinsley saved you.”

“What?” I spun around, facing him, baring my teeth. “That’s not what fucking happened.”

“Whoa.” Brian raised his hands at me then backed away. “No need to bite my head off. I was only repeating what was said to me.”

I was fucking fuming, but to be frank, I wasn’t surprised that word already spread around about what’d happened to me.

And since the details were beyond anything from the fucking truth, that told me exactly who was spreading this bullshit around.

Fucking Kinsley Sinclair. Probably her two flunkies too.

“Kinsley didn’t save me.” I shook my head and turned back around to finish brewing my coffee. “She fucking—”

“Uh, Samara…”

I twisted back around to find Brian’s head cocked slightly to the side; his brows crumpled. “I could be tripping, but Ithinkyour phone is ringing.”

It grew quiet for a small moment. As I listened, hearing the missed call notification and then my ringtone blasting up again barely ten seconds later, I sighed.

“Hang on. I’ll be right back.”

I trudged down the hall, way too overly exhausted to deal with whoever was blowing my phone up. As I snatched it off the charger, expecting it to be either Jace or Ginger, I bristled.

Oh, shit…

It was fucking Damien.

I gaped down at the screen, my mouth open wide, unsure of what to do. I mean, obviously I had to fucking answer the call, but I couldn’t with Brian here.

He had to go. Pronto.

“Hey, Brian.” I let the phone ring as I rushed back down the hall, a nervous smile on my face. “It’s uh, it’s my boss. I really have to take this so do you mind maybe…”

“Yeah, no problem. I’ll come check in later. And hey, don’t forget there’s a party tonight at the clearing. Sky’s not here you know, so I expect to see you there. Cool?”

“Eh, I don’t know,” I said, waving my hand at him as a means for him to move faster and get the fuck up out of my dorm room. “I’ll think about it.”

He smiled at me. “Catch you later then.”

I impatiently waited for him to leave and when he finally did, I glared down at the phone, my achy chest tight.

That fucking bastard.I wanted so badly to call him out, tell him to go fuck himself, and so much more.

But I couldn’t.

He had no idea I knew the truth. That Ginger and Jace had betrayed him and revealed all his vile and unholy secrets to me. Or that I knew about the snatch on my friend.

It had to stay that way.

Again, it wasn’t just my life on the line here. It was Jace and Ginger’s—possibly Finn’s too, assuming he knew.

As much as I fucking hated it, I had to keep my wits.

So, I schooled my face and got myself in character.

“Damien,” I cooed in the fakest, calmest tone I could muster. “Hey, I was just—”
