“It would,” she said with a smile.

“Now, back to the matter of a church. Would you prefer a calling of the banns, an ordinary license, or a special license? Your choice, my love, but, as for me, the sooner, the better. Now that I have your agreement, I wish to walk into the remainder of my days with you and our children about me.”

“I do not care which you choose. We can leave for Gretna Green, if that is your wish.”

“Not Gretna Green,” he explained with a smile. “No more scandal.” He kissed her forehead. “I am thinking an ordinary license. No more than a five day wait. What say you to that?”

“Sounds delightful, my Lord.”

He grinned widely.

“I agree, my love.”

His head bowed again to claim her lips.

Lost in the throes of first love, neither of them took note of the fellow dressed as a delivery man standing by the still open door.

“Happy life, my child,” he whispered as he turned from the office toward the street. “Just as I predicted, my daughter will have her dearest wish as the Countess of Harlow.” With one last glance toward the office, he said, “Forever happiness, Colleen. Your mother in heaven is smiling down upon both of us right now.” Outside, he paused to look to the sky. “I will return to your side soon, my love,” he said reverently. “The doctor assures me it is only a matter of weeks. I will see our Colleen with the man she adores and then be settled for my own future.” He laughed easily. “I have fulfilled your dying wish, Genevieve. Our daughter will have more than either of us thought possible.” He barked another laugh. “I believe a toast to Lord and Lady Harlow is in order.”

With that, he sauntered away, ignoring all the stares of confusion upon the faces of those upon the street. London’s most infamous jewel thief had had his way with the 8th Earl Harlow: Thomas Everley could not think of a better ending to his story or that of his daughter.

About the Author

Writing passionately comes easily to Regina Jeffers. A master teacher, for thirty-nine years, she passionately taught thousands of students English in the public schools of West Virginia, Ohio, and North Carolina. Yet, ‘teacher’ does not define her as a person. Ask any of her students or her family, and they will tell you Regina is passionate about so many things: her son, her grandchildren, truth, children in need, our country’s veterans, responsibility, the value of a good education, words, music, dance, the theatre, pro football, classic movies, the BBC, track and field, books, books, and more books. Holding multiple degrees, Jeffers often serves as a Language Arts or Media Literacy consultant to school districts and has served on several state and national educational commissions.

Jeffers’s writing career began when a former student challenged her to do what she so ‘righteously’ told her class should be accomplished in writing. On a whim, she self-published her first book Darcy’s Passions. “I never thought anything would happen with it. Then one day, a publishing company contacted me. They had watched the sales of the book on Amazon, and they offered to print it. The rest is history.”

Since that time, Jeffers continues to write. “Writing is just my latest release of the creative side of my brain. I taught theatre, even participated in professional and community-based productions when I was younger. I trained dance teams, flag lines, majorettes, and field commanders. My dancers were both state and national champions. I simply require time each day to let the possibilities flow. When I write, I write as I used to choreograph routines for my dance teams; I write the scenes in my head as if they are a movie.

Usually, it plays there for several days being tweaked and rewritten, but, eventually, I put it to paper. From that point, things do not change much because I have completed several mental rewrites.”
