“This is different, though. Tam didn’t hate you.”

“He did, at first. He hated my father—he still does. He only tolerates him because of the business. Plus, I was supposed to marry his brother, Harvey, and a part of him blamed me for Harvey’s death. He said if Harvey hadn’t been at the wedding that day, he never would have died.”

“I remember Leo saying something about it. That must have been horrific for you.”

“It was, and when I was told I had to marry Tam, I thought my life was over. But it worked out in the end.” She gave a small smile. “We got our happy ending.”

“I can’t see Leo and I having a happy ending.”

“Only the two of you can decide that.”

I nodded. “I’m going to go home—I mean, back to the flat.”

“That’s not a good idea.”

She didn’t need to explain why.

“I want to be alone” I said. “I need some time to think.”

“How about you just come and hang with Layla and me for the rest of the day? The men need to finalise the job tonight, so we can leave them to it, and go and enjoy ourselves instead. It’ll give you and Leo some space as well.”

The idea of hanging out with the two other women for the rest of the day drew me in. I remembered how I’d been reminding myself that I didn’t have any friends. How could I make any if I turned down the offer to spend some time with them?

“Are you sure?” I checked cautiously. “I don’t want to intrude.”

“You’re not intruding. It’ll be fun.”

She flashed me a warm smile, and I nodded.

“Okay, let’s do it.”
