“It’s not so simple. I’m not sure when our relationship was ever real. It started on a lie. And then I asked for more, and you were very cold about that. I’m not even sure—”

“It was real the moment I told you I loved you. That’s where we begin.”

Her eyes bored into mine.

“We can take things as slow as you want. I don’t care about the specifics, just as long as we’re together.”

“Then maybe we shouldn’t live together…”

It was a disappointment because I wanted her in my bed every night. It was ironic since I’d tried so hard to keep her away for so long. “If that’s what you want. I can do my business from Paris, so you can continue to live here.”

She gave a nod. “Okay.”

I finally got a yes. I finally got something good out of her. “Can I take you to dinner tomorrow night?”

“Sure. But I was just about to make dinner…if you’d like to join me.”

It was the first time I felt good. Felt like everything would be okay. “I’d love to.”

We lay on the couch together, watching TV. She was wrapped in my arms, leaning against my chest with her head just under mine. The fire had gone out a while ago, and I could tell she was asleep based on the way her breathing had changed. The show ended and something else came on, but I didn’t dare move, not when she was in my arms like this. We’d never done this before. Never snuggled together on a couch or in a bed as we watched TV.

It was nice.

She stirred thirty minutes later, taking a deep breath when she came to. She turned her neck to look up at me, her eyes tired like she wanted to keep sleeping. “Sorry…”

“It’s alright.” I pressed a kiss to her temple.

She turned to face me, her little body still wrapped in my arms. “You’re comfortable.”

“Yeah?”

“And warm.”

“Good thing, since the fire went out.”

With sleepy eyes, she looked at me, looked at me like she didn’t want to stop. “I’d invite you to sleep over, but…”

“But what?”

“You know…”

My eyes flicked back and forth between hers. “I’m fine just sleeping with you, baby.”

“Yeah?”

“I’d much rather sleep here with you than alone in my apartment…missing you.”

After a half smile, we locked up the house and went upstairs to her bedroom. She washed her face in the bathroom before she joined me under the covers, snuggling into my body just the way she had on the couch.

We were locked together, her leg over my hip, the two of us sharing a single pillow. She was just in a t-shirt and her panties, and it was hard to keep myself limp so I wouldn’t jab her all night long.

“Have you talked to Grave?” she asked out of nowhere.

“No. Why?”

“He broke up with Elise.”
