“Really? Because you sounded proud a minute ago.”

My arms crossed over my chest. “I just wish my father… That’s beside the point. Why are you going in there, telling them you’re my boyfriend?”

“Because you told them I was.”

“I just said that in the moment. I didn’t mean it.”

His eyes shifted back and forth between mine. “You told Victor, and then you told Lucas. You didn’t mean it twice?”

“I was just…bragging.”

“Then I guess I was bragging too.”

“Do you realize the situation we’re in now? My father is pissed, and he’s not going to leave me alone until he finds out who you are.”

“Then tell him.” He carried on the conversation without raising his voice a decibel, without looking remotely flustered by the drama he’d gotten roped into. “Give him my name. Give him my address. I don’t care.”

I took a deep breath because I was about to explode. “If I do that, one of you will wind up dead.”

“Well, you don’t seem to like him, and apparently I’m not your boyfriend anymore, so…”

My arms loosened to my sides when I heard the way his tone changed. “Are you mad at me?”

“Am I your boyfriend or not?”

“I told you I just said that in the moment—”

“Then I’m not?”

“Yes.”

“Then I’m mad.”

“What?”

“I don’t appreciate being led on.”

“I didn’t lead you on—”

“You said I was yourhot-as-fuck boyfriend who fucks your brains out.”

“Again, I just said that to brag, okay?”

“Really?” He stepped toward me, and now his anger took a more sinister turn. “You brag about your sex life to your father too?”

I tried to hold his gaze, but it was getting harder as he stared at me like that.

“If you really wanted to get out of this situation, you could have just said I was some lunatic obsessed with you. But you didn’t. You called me your man—and said it like you meant it.”

I kept my stance, but it was becoming more difficult. This man had always been on my side of the battlefield, but now he was my opponent, and it was a different side to him I didn’t recognize.

“Did you?”

“Did I what—”

“Mean it.” His voice was quiet, but so deep it was like a cavern. His eyes cut right into me.

“Look, we both agreed this was just—”
