“But if you’re bored,” I said, pulling out of my thoughts, “you can tell me more about your people.”

“Demons are not people, Cole,” he said in a low voice.

“Right.”

Apparently, Ambri wanted me to be careful too.

“Can they all do what you do? Hold still like that?”

“We have a vast array of talents.”

He made a motion with his hand, and the door behind me locked itself. I jumped, staring. He turned and flicked his fingers at a book lying on the coffee table and it slid to the floor.

“Holy shit…”

“T’is nothing,” Ambri said. “Most demons can perform minor acts of telekinesis. Comes in handy, especially when humans toy with Ouija boards or hold seances.”

“Mostdemons can do that? Well shit, how many are there?”

“Legions.”

I nearly made a misstroke,“Legions?”

“Don’t give yourself an apoplexy. There are plenty of angels too.”

“You’re telling me there are a bunch of angels and demons just walking around among us?”

“Not quite,” Ambri said. “Angels only come to This Side if they have unfinished business. Demons come to play. But not every demon is powerful enough to remain on This Side, disguised as a human. Most are servitors, pouring their poison into human thoughts from the Other Side of the Veil.”

“How many demons are here disguised as humans?”

“Aside from me?” he said pointedly. “Not many. Perhaps a few thousand.”

“A fewthousand?”

“You’re beginning to sound like a strangled parrot, Cole Matheson.”

“Do I know any?”

A pause. “No.”

“That answer is unsatisfactory,” I teased.

Ambri didn’t elaborate, so I retreated to my work, turning over his words.

“Pouring poison into thoughts… When I was in the depths of my depression, that’s exactly what it felt like. Poisonous thoughts that were trying to kill me.”

“You had the Twins attached to you like leeches.”

“The Twins. Christ, do I even want to know?”

“They are sister demons who drive humans to despair through feelings of worthlessness.”

“They’re good at their job. That night, at the bridge…” I shivered. “It seemed like every thought was driving me to the edge.”

“They feed existing insecurities, fears, or trauma, until there’s no room for anything else. But they can’t physically hurt you. No demon can. Free will and all that. Demons can lead you to the abyss, but they can’t push you in.”

I nodded. “I haven’t heard the Twins much lately. Or at all, come to think of it.”
