“I’m sorry to be the one to tell you then, sir, but Jimmy is unwell. He is in Kings County right now, but I’m not sure what is wrong with him.”

Thanking her for letting me know, I make a mental note to call on him before heading back to Virginia.

Deciding to enjoy the warmer weather, I walk south on Flatbush Avenue before turning right on Tillary street. The ten-minute walk sees me taking the scenic route onto Jay Street before turning left onto Myrtle Avenue. Once I reach Lawrence Street, The Brooklyner Apartments, where Sumner and Tatum reside, comes into view.

When searching for an apartment for them, we looked in downtown Brooklyn because they wanted to be as central to everything as possible. Sumner instantly fell in love with the three-bedroom, one-bathroom studio Emily found, so I bought it. They resisted at first, but I made a healthy profit when I sold Sumner’s apartment in Virginia, and it was mine and Emily’s way of giving them a head start with their new life.

“Hey, dad,” Sumner greets with a hug after opening the door. “Someone is waiting for you,” she beams, directing me to her living area.

Following closely behind, the vision of my gorgeous little granddaughter brightens my face. Abi is sitting in her highchair, attempting to eat yogurt with her spoon, her attention solely concentrated on the television screen before her.

“Hey, princess,” I call upon approach.

Turning, she starts squealing and squirming in her seat. As I get closer, I can see that she has more of the yogurt on her face, in her hair, and over the highchair than it appears she has eaten.

“You look like you’re having fun.” I laugh, pulling up a chair beside her.

“Pop, pop, pop, pop.”

With wide, bright eyes, she stretches out her arms to indicate she wants me to pick her up.

“Let me clean her up for you first,” I hear Sumner say from behind me.

“Come on, messy one, let’s clean you up for poppa.” Sumner laughs at her daughter.

While I wait for them to return, I text Emily.

Me: Hey beautiful, just checking in.

It takes a few moments, but eventually, Emily replies.

Emily: Mi oso. How are our girls?

Me: Doing well. How was your day?

Emily: It was a busy one. Am currently having dinner with Mary and her husband. She didn’t want me eating alone tonight.

Me: I’m glad to hear that. She is an angel, that woman.

Emily: I love you.

Me: I love you, too, beautiful one. I’ll see you in a couple of days.

Emily: Looking forward to it ;)

Sumner has returned with Abi when I place my cell back in my pocket. Placing her on my knee, I bounce her up and down, making her giggle.

“So, Em tells me you have picked your wedding venue,” I suddenly distract Sumner.

“Oh my god, dad, yes!” she squeals. “How much did Em tell you?” She goes on to inquire.

“Not much, sweetheart. She wanted to let you do that,” I assure her.

Rambling, Sumner starts telling me that they have chosen The Liberty Warehouse on Pier forty-one. She further explains that it’s located on the water’s edge, giving us wide-ranging views of New York harbor.

“The view of the Statue of Liberty looking onto France is what sold it for Tatum.” Sumner giggles. “He spent at least twenty minutes staring at her when we visited.”

“Are you planning on hosting the ceremony and reception there?” I quiz.
