Brent stood at the front of the crowded bedroom. He, along with several other men, was sporting a black eye that was in the process of turning yellow around the edges.

“Devon and his military men have left Baedden.”

“Now is the time to go through with the mission.”

A soft cheer filled the room, the electric energy getting even Nova excited.

“Meghan,” Brent said, turning toward her. “What did you find?”

“I saw the map of the route the shipment will take, and I memorized a few names on that map.”

Brent nodded to Mak who opened a dresser drawer and pulled out a large piece of paper. Nova recognized it right away as a map of the same area as the one she’d seen in Altair’s office.

The women stood up from the bed, and Mak laid the map down, handing Nova a writing device with a wink.

She traced the route she’d memorized as best she could then moved out of the way so Brent and Neil could get a better view.

They began to talk over each other in excited voices.

“They moved up the shipment date to tomorrow,” she heard Neil say. “Probably because they found out someone broke into Altair’s office.”

They looked at Nova.

“Sorry,” she said.

“Kal’s face was beat up worse than Mak’s,” Neil told her.

Kal must have been the man she’d hit with the statue.

“Don’t worry about it,” Mak said, slapping Neil on the arm. “You did a great job.” He pointed at the map as evidence.

None of them mentioned her choice of weapon. Maybe they hadn’t heard.

“Tomorrow is short notice,” Brent said. “But we’ve been preparing for weeks. We’re ready.”

“I agree,” Mak said. “The longer we wait the more time they will have to change their route.”

“Agreed,” said a chorus of voices.

They spent the rest of the meeting planning.

After the meeting, Mak walked Nova out of the room.

“Are you scared?” he asked once they were out of the other’s earshot.

“No,” she said. “It’s a good plan.”

“Good. I don’t want you to feel pressured. If you don’t want to do this, you don’t have to.”

“I want to help you,” she said, and to her surprise, she meant it. She mostly wanted to do her job and leave Mudden, but she also wanted to help.

He arrived at the door and turned to face her.

“You just got here,” he said. “And you are technically a member of the Mudden clan. This isn’t your fight, but we appreciate the help.”

He stepped closer and brushed a strand of hair off her face. He smiled a dark, sexy smile full of promise, and Nova’s heart beat harder against her ribcage.

“Brave and beautiful,” he said. “The universe played a cruel joke when the algorithm matched you to Altair.”
