She swallowed the lump in her throat. She had to be careful. It was now or never. If she said yes, Altair would never let her go. And for some reason that sounded wonderful to her. She felt the tears prickling her eyes and this time she welcomed them. Altair was… flawed, sure, but he was also perfect, if that made any sense. He was loyal, passionate, hard-working, smart, he took care of her, and he really loved her. No amount of bossiness and family baggage could take away from that. She didn’t know at what point she’d started to fall in love with him, but she had. She wanted him, more than she wanted to leave.

“Yes,” she said, smiling at him. “I want to be your wife.”

Altair swept her up into his arms and crushed her mouth with his. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him back.

“I love you,” she said, between kisses. He growled and pulled her in even closer.

“Is this a passionate goodbye kiss, or are we free to leave?” Elizabeth yelled out to them. “I’ve got other things to do.”

Altair put her back down, grabbed her hand, and marched back to where Elizabeth and Rex were waiting impatiently.

“She’s not leaving.”

Elizabeth looked at Nova with raised eyebrows, and Nova nodded.

“But we need to talk,” Altair said, looking mostly at Rex. “You don’t tell anyone about Nova not being Meghan, and I won’t tell about the two of you being rebels.”

“Agreed,” Elizabeth said.

Rex grunted his approval.

“Nova no longer owes you anything and vise versa.”

“Fine.”

“We are not on your side,” he continued. “Do not drag us down with you when you inevitably fail.”

Rex folded his arms across his chest, looking even less friendly than before.

“In that case, stay out of our way, or we will not spare you when the time comes for your family to step down.”

Altair didn’t look happy with Rex’s response, but in the end said, “Fine.”

“Well, that was interesting,” Elizabeth said, looking from one to the other. “Nova, call me if you need anything.”

Nova smiled as a muscle in Altair’s jaw twitched.

“I will. You too. Just nothing that requires sneaking, stealing, or lying. I’m done with that.”

Elizabeth nodded and waved goodbye as they left.

Altair turned to face Nova.

“You just completely undermined everything I said.”

She shrugged.

“Elizabeth is my friend. You can’t just decide that I can’t see her.”

“So is that what my life is going to be like from now on? You constantly contradicting me?”

“You like it,” she said with a smile.

“In bed.” He gave her a shy smile that made her stomach hop.

“That’s not what you said before.”

Altair pulled her into him.
