I decide to let him get past me and into the backseat. I slide behind the wheel, taking off as soon as Griffyn is in the car.

I hear Felix whisper, “What happened, man?”

But there’s no response from Griffyn. He’s just staring into space. I decide to give him the ride back to the hotel, even though I am dying to know what has him acting like this.

Everyone is silent, and there’s an awkward tension in the air. Blaze keeps cracking his knuckles while Felix steals glances at Griffyn.

When we pull up to the hotel, everyone files out in silence and heads right to our rooms. We are sharing two between us.

As soon as the door shuts behind us, I round on Griffyn.

“Okay, I gave you space, but now you need to tell me what is going on. “It’s a command. One he would normally bristle at but not this time.

I watch as he shakes off whatever is bothering him and puts on his normal mask.

“Sorry, just shocked, is all. I found the girl. At least based on the facts. She works at a local bar.”

My jaw tightens as I try to reign in my anger, but some of my magic still leaks out. “You found the vampire, but you didn’t think to contact one of us?”

He rolls his eyes, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark as usual. He’s hiding something.

“I figured if we knew where she works, we could find her again. It’s not like it would have been easy for you to get to me without the car, which I needed to follow her, by the way. It’s a good thing I did.”

Felix steps in before I rip into him. “This is a good thing. We found our target. Tomorrow we can head to the bar and get a feel for her.”

“We should probably go in shifts to be less suspicious. Four big dudes showing up at once will draw attention,” Blaze adds.

Both of them have calmed down, just happy that Griffyn is here safe. I cannot find peace as easily as them, but I keep my temper under control.

“Fine,” I concede, “Griffyn and I will take the first shift tomorrow. Blaze and Felix can go the next day.”

The incubus almost looks like he’s going to protest but bites his tongue instead.

I dismiss them all, starting to get ready for bed. Griffyn and Felix shuffle out the door, heading into their room next to us.

Blaze doesn’t try to speak to or calm me down, instead leaving me to work through it myself.

I try to think of the positives. We have a lead to follow regarding the case. The vampire has been found, and her work has been identified. Griffyn will be able to describe her or find her again.

It’s not a complete case or even a lot to go on, but it’s enough for now.

I finish getting ready, sliding under the covers, and mentally preparing for tomorrow.

Griffyn and I pull up outside The Riddler. It’s not to my taste, but unfortunately, I think I’ll be spending a lot of time here while we scout her out.

Griffyn seems nervous, something he never is. Something about this place or this girl has him acting completely out of character. He’s quiet and not pushing every button I have for his own pleasure.

We stride through the front door of the bar. It’s close to ten in the morning, so the place is mostly empty. There are three other barflies around the place.

We grab a table in the back, but there isn’t anywhere to hide. We should have come at a busier time, but I’m anxious to see what has Griffyn in such a twist.

A gorgeous blonde stands behind the bar. She’s talking to an older man I have to assume is either her manager or the owner. I can hear her tinkling laugh from here, which rings like music to my ears.

Music to my ears? What the fuck is wrong with me?

“Is she here?” I ask, turning to look at Griffyn. He’s staring at the blonde with wide eyes.
