Anna

We show up at their house to find Aly and Nic waiting in the foyer. They’re both dressed for comfort but clearly prepared for anything to happen.

Nic doesn’t acknowledge the Alpha Team, but Aly gives them a small smile. It’s so unlike the friendly Nic I know, but I have to remember he has a history with some of them. Something I should keep in mind for myself.

I can’t help but notice the guys keep their distance from Aly, standing on Nic’s side. Felix is even standing slightly in front of me. Do they not trust my best friend? Because that would be a real issue.

“So, what’s the plan?” I ask.

We agreed on the way over here that it would be best if I took the lead with Nic and Aly. Aksel begrudgingly agreed. He knows how Nic feels about him, and he made clear a few days ago that he’s doing this to help me.

“We have to go to the house where the interaction happened. As much as I don’t want to include Aly in this, she insists on transporting us there. I would have preferred to use Aksel’s money to buy transport charms, but she convinced me,” Nic says.

I almost snort. Nic is filthy rich, and he’s commenting on someone else’s wealth?

Aly rolls her eyes, stepping closer to transport all of us. One of her powers is the ability to transport herself and groups around. It’s very convenient. If only one of these guys could do it.

“Before we go, I should warn you. I wasn’t able to find a lot of information about this spell. Information seems to have been hoarded by wealthy families. I found the spell and how it works but barely anything else. You’ll be a projection in time, unable to interact with anything. It ensures you don’t change the course of history,” Nic explains.

It sounds like the perfect way to witness a conversation we shouldn’t be privy to.

“Thanks, Nic,” I say, squeezing his arm in thanks.

Felix steps closer to me.

We all look at Aly, waiting for her to do her thing.

Her transportation is smoother than the charms. The action jostles my amulet, so I quickly shove it back under my shirt.

We are standing in the living room of the empty house.

“Perfect. Aly was able to take us inside the house, which means the protective charms are gone. That’s key for the spell to work,” Nic says.

He starts pulling stuff out of his bag and setting it out on the coffee table. Quickly, he has everything set up.

“Let’s do this. When you’re ready to come back, you just clap in front of your face like this.” He demonstrates. It looks like how you would try to get someone’s attention.

He chants something I can’t begin to understand.

Nic finishes his spell, and seconds later, it feels like I’m sucked into a vortex. It feels like my entire body is being pulled through my belly button.

My knees hit the floor hard enough to bruise, but I don’t feel it. In fact, I can’t feel anything.

I was expecting to throw up after all that spinning, but even that sensation is missing.

“We are only projections. We can’t use our powers or touch each other,” Felix explains when he sees the look on my face.

I shoot a look over at Griffyn. Did he know we wouldn’t be able to use our powers? He’s not looking at me, instead studying our surroundings.

“This is the house alright, except it’s full of stuff and clearly being lived in. That’s a good sign we are doing this right,” Griffyn says, staring at the bookcase that leads down to the basement.

“That’s where we need to go, right?” I ask.

“Right. How do we get down there when we can’t touch the bookcase?” Felix asks.

None of us know much about this. Even Nic had a hard time finding information, and he’s a mage.

Blaze strides forward confidently and into the bookcase. He just disappears through it. How did he know that would work?
