The walk home is quick. I unlock my door, pushing my way inside.

A flash of red at my feet catches in my peripherals. On the floor, as if slid from the space under the door, lies an envelope the color of blood.

“What the hell?” I mumble. Did my landlord send me something?

I pick it up, slide my finger under the seal, and flip it open.

There’s a folded piece of paper on the inside. It only has one sentence on it.

I found you.

Chills run down my spine. Who would give this to me?

I inspect the front and back of the envelope. There’s no name, no postage stamp, or return address. Someone must have slipped it under my door by accident, or at least that’s what I convinced myself.

Five

Felix

Since none of us had a way to contact Nicoli’s pack, we decided to just show up unannounced. We don’t know their actual address, but their school has been mentioned in some circles Aksel runs in. Even though they’re different races, Aksel and Nicoli are both disgustingly rich, which means they cross paths from time to time. It was strange for supernaturals to go to a mostly-human school, so the masses were obviously gossiping.

When we get to campus, Blaze and I will track their scents. It’ll be easy to find supernatural scents when they’re surrounded by humans.

It’s a full day’s drive from Oregon to Brickstone University. We are used to traveling all over the place for missions but would have considered transporting there if it was further than this, but Aksel didn’t want to leave his car behind. It’s his baby.

Pulling into their main campus, we take in the red-bricked buildings, large oak trees, and older architecture. I can see the draw. It’s nicer than the academy where I trained.

“Where should we start?” I ask, ready to get going immediately.

“Don’t you think we should rest after a day of travel? We want to be sharp,” Griffyn drawls from next to me in the back of the car. The lazy fucker is sprawled across the back seat and just woke up from a nap.

You would think he’d be ready to go after resting the entire drive here.

“No,” Aksel commands from the driver’s seat. “I don’t want to delay any further. It already took me too long to decide the right course of action.”

Blaze only grunts in response.

“You mean us,” Griffyn says testily. His voice is sharp.

“Us what?” Aksel doesn’t even look back at him.

“It took us too long to decide. It was a group decision.”

The car is dead silent for what feels like forever but was probably only a minute. Aksel finally makes a noise of acknowledgment, and Griff lets it go though I know nothing was really solved.

Aksel is always lording his leadership over us, and sometimes Griffyn likes to push back. Blaze and I have accepted Aksel’s personality, but I’ll agree, sometimes he takes over too much.

“Blaze and Felix, see if you can catch any scents. We don’t want to search the whole campus on foot unless we have to.” Aksel keeps driving but puts the windows down in the car.

I close my eyes and tune everything out except my sense of smell. I take in the scents of the cafeteria we pass full of fried food and pizza. I ignore the pang in my stomach, refocusing on finding their scents. There are a lot of humans everywhere. Their heavy perfumes and colognes give me a headache as I sort through them. I know there’s a wolf shifter in Nicoli’s pack. That must be rough on him to be around constantly.

Aksel keeps driving, winding through the streets, following a predetermined path in his mind. I’m sure he knows the best way to hit every area, so I don’t question his methods. Finally, as we leave the main part of campus and go into housing, I faintly pick up another shifter’s scent.

“Stop!”

Blaze looks back at me with a raised eyebrow, clearly wondering what he missed. Dragons still have shifter senses, but their sense of smell is weaker than my snow leopard. A wolf has an even stronger olfaction.

“You found something?” Aksel asks.
