I take slow, careful steps toward him. When he doesn’t flinch away, I keep going.

I sit on the edge of his bed, letting him make the next move.

“One of them can take you to the hospital to get you some help while we look for your Grandma.. Are you okay with that?” We don’t know what condition his Grandma is in and I don’t want him seeing anything.

His eyes dart behind me to take in the crew of intimidating men. They must realize the scene they make because Blaze, Aksel, and Griffyn back out of the room, leaving only Felix.

He smiles at the young boy, and it’s genuine enough to slightly set him at ease.

“You’ll find Grandma?”

“We will look as soon as you leave.”

I stand up, giving him room to slowly climb off the bed. He hides behind me as we slowly walk towards Felix.

Felix squats, intentionally making himself smaller while he waits for the boy. When he hold his hand out for him, Michael moves around me and to Felix.

“I’m going to take you to the hospital now. We will have to transport, which might feel a little funny, but it won’t hurt you.” Felix looks up at me. “I’ll be right back. Be safe while I’m gone.”

The next second, they’re both gone.

I exit the room to find the other three waiting by the final locked door. I appreciate that they waited for me.

I hope we find the grandma behind this door. We can take her to the hospital to meet up with her grandson and have a happy reunion. The alternative is too upsetting.

I take a deep breath and roll my shoulders backwards. No matter what is behind this door, I can handle it.

Griffyn, Aksel and Blaze are watching me. Griffyn opens his mouth to say something but snaps it shut and turns his attention to the door while casually throwing an arm around me, tugging me closer.

Blaze lifts his leg and kicks this door open. The bulk of his body is blocking my view of the contents. I feel frozen in place, unwilling to go around him. If it was good news, I don’t think he would have stopped.

The poor grandma.

“Aksel, you need to see this,” Blaze whispers harshly.

Aksel pushes past me to stand next to Blaze and look in the room.

“What the fuck?” Aksel spits out.

What is happening in that room? Finally my limbs loosen, I need to know what’s going on.

I step out of Griffyn’s comfort and raise my hand to push past the other who when a new voice speaks.

“I don’t know who you are but you need to get me out of here!”

My stomach flips. I know that voice.

It’s the same voice I hear in my nightmares, that I blame the loss of my future on. The voice I hear in my ears when I’m feeling weak and remember the good times. How great a boyfriend he could be, the feel of his hands on my body, how right it felt to be with him.

It doesn’t make sense. My world shifts on it’s axis as I push past Aksel and Blaze to see him for myself.

In front of me, sitting in a cage, is Ryan. His normally beautiful blonde hair is long and greasy, hanging limp against his head. He looks pale and weak, like he’s been starved down here.

I expect to see hatred and malice staring back at me. It’s the last memory I have of him. Instead, his eyes are bright with wonder as he takes in every inch of me.

We are both studying each other with disbelief.

“Anna! You’re alive?” He sounds shocked, pain evident in his voice. “I- I thought he killed you.”
